Defect. BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 528i, 528i xDrive, 328i, 328xi, 2016-2018 X5 xdrive 40e, 2014-2016 228i, 228xi, 428i, 428i xDrive, 328xi Gran Turismo, 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i, 2015-2016 428xi vehicles. An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

Risk. An electrical short increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy. Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The parking brake connector is bad on a brake that is never used.

Possible wiring harness for the air conditioning system that may be damaged and cause a short circuit. Had to air compressors installed and both reasons codes were "shorts". A damaged A/C wiring harness can short-circuit, potentially creating electrical issues and increasing safety risks while driving or when parked. A recall was just issued in February but my vehicle wasn't included and I'm thinking it is because most BMW owners today would not be owning a 2016 coupe which I bought in 2020 just because it was a good deal. The engine coolant pump on my 2016 BMW 4 Series has an open recall (#24V-608), issued in August 2024. It’s been almost a year, and the remedy is still marked as "Not Available." Recently, my check engine light came on. I used my personal OBD-II scanner and retrieved fault code U019F, which indicates “Lost Communication with Engine Coolant Pump Control Module.” This is directly related to the recalled component. I contacted BMW of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY, and they told me I need to pay $335 for a diagnostic, even though I already provided the fault code and it matches the recall issue. They said this is a “standard diagnostic fee,” and they do not offer reimbursement even if it turns out to be related to the recall. BMW North America customer support told me that if a dealership confirms the fault is recall-related, they may try to expedite the remedy. But to get that confirmation, I’m expected to pay out of pocket first — which I find unacceptable since the part is already under an open recall and has now failed. So far, no dealer or service center has inspected the vehicle officially because I don’t want to pay $335 to confirm something I already know. Yes, my safety is at risk — the engine cooling system is compromised, and I’m afraid to drive the car. On our 2016 BMW 428i----RECALL 24V608--Engine Coolant Pump --no remedy as of yet (9.3.24). We have contacted BMW several times. We are worried for our safety because the drops of liquid could drip down onto the electrical connector of the pump. This could short circuit and might even cause a fire. Please HELP! Re BMW 2016 428ix- BMW admits that there is a design flaw in this model, but has not remedied a fix for this 'MALFUNCTION DEFECT'. Top does not open or close is the end result. Getting caught in a flash rain, and wanting to close the top was impossible. Trying to pull over to the nearest overpass till rain lightens up, the most dangerous situation to be in. This is a SAFETY issue and bmw will not take care of it. I have come to learn, that It seems in their design flaw, rain collects that you cant see, but shorts out the motor of the top and top will not function at all. Many owners have the same problem and BMW will not recall it. Local dealer says he has to drill 2 holes on the bottom of the car so water will drain out and then a new motor for the top installed. Cost $2400. BMW service knows the problem, has many cars with the same problem.There is no warning that your top wont work. DRILL 2 HOLES???

On January 7, 2022 I was driving in the neighborhood and applied the brake to stop. As the car was slowing down, the engine revved to 3,000 RPM making stopping difficult. I came to a full stop and the engine continued to rev. I quickly lifted my foot off the brake pedal and re-applied the brake pedal and the RPM returned to idle. On the same day about an hour later, I experienced the same issue at a shopping center, only this time the engine RPM suddenly increased to 4,000 RPM. I tried to place the transmission in Park, but it wouldn't let me. I temporarily lifted my foot off the brake pedal and re-applied and the RPM returned to normal. In both cases I was able to bring the car to a full stop but had to apply heavy pressure on the pedal.

I was merging onto the highway with no one in front of me. Then there was a loud pop sounding like a tire popped. I pulled over to assess the damage and discovered the sunroof had exploded/shattered.

I WAS ON AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE INTERSTATE ON A SUNNY DAY WHEN IT HAPPENED. SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 55MPH.

THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR-DRIVER'S SIDE PERIODICALLY STICKS IN A LOCKED POSITION. WHEN I ATTEMPT TO EXIT THE CAR,THE LOCKING MECHANISM DOES NOT RELEASE WHEN DOOR HANDLE IS PULLED.I HAVE TO PRESS UNLOCK BUTTON TO DEACTIVATE THE LOCK AND HAVE HANDLE RETURN TO NORMAL FUNCTION.I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE REMEDIED BY BMW

SEVERAL TIMES THE DRIVERS DOOR WILL NOT OPEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK AND THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO PASSPORT BMW IN SUITLAND MARYLAND ON 7/10 TO REPAIR THE FRONT BRAKE I MENTION THIS PROBLEM OF THE DOOR LOCKING ME INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND I CANNOT GET OUT. I WAS TOLD BY MY SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON AND CAN BE REPAIRED BUT IT WILL COST. I DID NOT GET IT FIX BECAUSE I DO NOT THINK THAT I SHOULD PAY TO CORRECT A DEFECT IN THE SOFTWARE THAT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. THE DOOR SHOULD OPEN WHEN YOU PLACE THE CAR IN PARK AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF IF THE DOOR LOCK IS NOT ON. IT SHOULD ALWAYS OPEN WHEN YOU TRY TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RAIN I WENT TO PASS A CAR AND PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR SEEMED TO SPIN OUT A LITTLE AND THEN THE ENGINE LOST MOST OF ITS POWER AND STARTED TO SPUTTER AND GARGLE AS IF IT WAS GOING TO STALL OUT. THE WARNING FOR POWER TRAIN FAILURE CAME ON. VERY DANGEROUS ON A FREEWAY OF SPEEDS UP TO 60+. HAD TO GET OVER, EXIT THE FREEWAY AND PULL INTO A GAS STATION. I FIGURED I WOULD LET IT SIT AND THEN TRY TO START AGAIN AND SEE WHAT ERROR CODES CAME ON. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR ALL SEEMED BACK TO NORMAL. THE VERY NEXT DAY WHEN PULLING OUT ON TO A BUSY ROAD, I PRESSED THE GAS AND THE CAR DID THE VERY SAME THING. I THEN GOOGLED THE ISSUE AND IT IS A ONGOING ISSUE ACROSS SEVERAL BMW MODELS AND YEARS. I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU GOOGLE THIS DRIVE TRAIN ISSUE AND SEE THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AND RESOLVED. *TR

VEHICLE ELETRONIC STEERING MALFUNCTIONED (EPS), SAME WAY AS TIS BULLETIN SI B01 26 18 AND RECALL SI B32 12 16. VEHICLE WOULDN'T STEER CORRECTLY ON THE ROAD AND THE WHOLE STEERING RACK HAD TO BE REPLACED. ONE MONTH OUT OF BMW WARRANTY, HAD TO PAY FOR ENTIRE REPAIR OUT OF MY POCKET.

I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE AS A CPO VEHICLE WITH 4 BRAND NEW EAGLE F1 ASYMMETRIC 2 TIRES. WITHIN MONTHS ALL 4 TIRES DEVELOPED BUBBLES THAT TORE OPEN VIA AN INITIAL BUBBLE OR THEY TORE OPEN WITHOUT WARNING. ALL 4 WERE REPLACED AND LESS THAN 8 MONTHS LATER ANOTHER ONE DEVELOPED A TEAR SO LONG THAT I COULD NOT EVEN DRIVE IT AS A RUN FLAT. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. THESE TIRES ARE DEFECTIVE AS WELL AS TOTALLY UNSAFE AND I WANT MY MONEY BACK. ALL 5 WENT FLAT AND MY CAR NOTIFIED ME OF IT. WHEN DIVING ON THE FREEWAY I HAD AN DRIVE TERRAIN MALFUNCTION ERROR IN MY BMW 4281. MY CAR STARED TO SLOW DOWN EXTREMELY FAST AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE TO GET OVER TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE SAFELY. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE IN SOME LOCK MODE AND I WOULD PRESS THE GAS AND WOULD ONLY GO LESS THAN 20 MPH. ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED 3 TIMES AND SIDESWIPED BY A BIG RIG TRYING TO MAKE IT OVER INTO THE FAR RIGHT EMERGENCY LANE. MY WIFE AND I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO BE KILLED OR CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT. COULD NOT EVEN GET IN NEUTRAL JUST TO COAST OVER. MADE IT OVER CALLED SOS ROAD SIDE ASSISTANTS. TOLD ME WITH THESE ISSUES JUST NEED TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE FOR 5 MINUTES AND IT SHOULD RE-SET. I DID THAT AND IT SEEMED TO FIX THE ISSUE TO LET ME MAKE IT HOME. TOOK SIDED STREETS THE WHOLE WAY AND TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THIS FUNCTION IS TO PROTECT THE CAR. I TOLD THEM WHAT ABOUT PROTECTING DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD WAY. THIS IS NOT A SAFETY DEVICE BUT SOMETHING THAT CAN TRIGGER A MAJOR ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS. THE DEALERSHIPS STATED THIS IS IN ALL NEWER BMW MAKES AND MODELS AND CAN BE TRIGGERED BY MANY MORE MALFUNCTIONS. IT CANNOT BE TURNED OFF. WAY TOO DANGEROUS! THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING HOME AFTER THE REPAIR, THE RUBBER WINDOW TRIM FLEW OFF AND THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL HISSING SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (SOUTH BAY BMW, 18800 HAWTHORNE BLVD, TORRANCE, CA, 90504), BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE HISSING NOISE; HOWEVER, THEY REPAIRED THE RUBBER WINDOW TRIM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND STATED THAT THE FAILURES DID NOT WARRANT A SAFETY OBLIGATION FROM BMW. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 14,000.

TWO COLLISIONS AND SEVERAL OTHER INCIDENTS WHERE I WAS DRIVING 40-60 MPH, THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME SUDDENLY BRAKED, AND I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED WITH ENOUGH TIME AND DISTANCE TO COMPLETELY STOP THE VEHICLE BEFORE COLLIDING WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. EACH TIME, ALTHOUGH I SLAMMED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE IMMEDIATELY, THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS BRAKING, BUT NOT NEARLY AS FAST OR AS INTENSELY ENOUGH GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE I WAS APPLYING TO THE BRAKES AND THE TIME AND DISTANCE I HAD TO STOP BEFORE REACHING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IN TWO OF THESE INSTANCES, WHERE THERE WERE CARS IN THE ADJACENT LANES, I WAS NOT ABLE TO SWERVE AWAY TO AVOID THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, I COLLIDED WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. IN OTHER INSTANCES, I WAS ONLY ABLE TO AVOID A COLLISION BY SWERVING INTO ADJACENT LANES.
