BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d) vehicles. The original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with an inflator that can explode during deployment.

Risk. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy. Dealers will inspect and replace the driver's air bag module as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 30, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

Risk. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag. On X5 and X6 vehicles, only the inflator will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 11, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2006 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 530xi Sports Wagon, 325i, 325xi, 325xi Sports Wagon, 330i, 330xi, Z4 3.0i and Z4 3.0si vehicles. The heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.

Risk. An electrical short can cause the parts within the PCV valve to melt, increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PCV valve heater, free of charge. The recall began May 30, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Note: This recall is an expansion to recall 17V-683.

Defect. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2000 323i sedans, coupes, convertibles, and Sports Wagons; 2000 328i sedans and coupes; 2001-2005 325i sedans, coupes, convertibles, and Sport Wagons; 2001-2005 325xi sedans and Sports Wagons; 2006 325i coupes and convertibles; 2001-2006 330i sedans, coupes, and convertibles; 2001-2005 330xi sedans; and 2001-2006 M3 coupes and convertibles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the air bag inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag.

Risk. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure could cause rupturing of the inflator resulting in metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.

Remedy. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until they have been repaired. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side frontal air bag, free of charge. An interim notice was mailed to owners in September 2014. A second notice was mailed when an adequate supply of parts became available, on December 1, 2014. Risk. Wiring that overheats could cause the electrical connectors to melt, and increase the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle is unattended.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiring and electrical connectors, free of charge. Interim letters were mailed on November 27, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy becomes available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Risk. Should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Remedy. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will repair the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 1, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 Series with standard seats, 5 Series with comfort seats, and Z4 models, will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat. The contact owns a 2006 BMW 33I. The contact stated that while driving at 75 MPH, the contact noticed smoke coming into the interior of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. In addition, the contact noticed fire coming from underneath the hood. The contact exited the vehicle. The contact stated he had to leave the vehicle abandoned for about a month. The contact stated that a certified independent mechanic diagnosed the failure as thermal damage due to the NHTSA recalls. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with an oil leak that caused the fire. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact was advised to have the vehicle towed to the dealer for further investigation. The contact stated that the manufacturer initiated an investigation, and after the investigation was performed, the case was closed. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000.

I was getting ready to leave my home and both front airbags deployed on me, which also resulted in my windshield breaking. I did not hit anything with the vehicle. I then looked up the VIN and noticed the 2 open recalls one is for the airbags, I contacted BMW left the service manager numerous voicemails he never returned any of my calls. Then I contacted BMW North America, I got the vehicle towed to BMW of Carslbad just before Thanksgiving 2024 I just picked up my vehicle on January 6 2025 and they did not fix the recalls on the vehicle. I have been without a vehicle since before Thanksgiving!! I have health issues and I am missing appointments. I am on a fixed income my husband just passed away. I need someone to help me I keep getting the run around. If there are open recalls they need to be fixed I don't understand.

Rolled down back window it broke and didn’t go back up

My airbag light is on. I checked the website, and realize that there is a recall for Takata airbags, however, when I input my VIN#, my vehicle does not show the active recall. There is an alert on the website that says "DO NOT DRIVE"....I cannot get any assistance from Takata when I call; they keep telling me that my car is not included. I don't believe it is safe to drive my car, and can't get any help.

UNKNOWN. I went to do the smog check on my car and I found that I have a recall and the description on the paper is positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) valve heater

All door lock actuators (including the fuel cap door cover) stopped working after driving the vehicle. The passenger and both rear doors were able to open via the inside door handle, but the driver side door could not be unlocked via the key fob, console lock button, or manually pulling the inside door handle. The fuel cap door cover could only be opened via the emergency release pull in the trunk. After inspecting the fuse box, I found that fuse 57a was blown. I replaced the fuse and the locking mechanisms started functioning again. weeks later the same issue occurred, only replacing the fuses remedied the problem for only a day or two. The fact that the driver's side door could not be opened by ANY means from inside or outside the vehicle poses a severe safety risk in situations where the driver of the car needs to exit the vehicle themself or be evacuated carefully in the event of injury. There are NO warnings, messages or warning signs before this occurs. This appears to be a common issue on my model and others, originating from issues with the door lock actuators. BMW even has a service information bulletin about it: "SI B51 19 07". The fact that the driver-side door can spontaneously become unopenable from inside or outside while the driver is in the car is a HUGE safety risk.

Fuel pump leaking gas due to cracks on top of fuel pump

My car was just sitting in my driveway and my roommate noticed she said is there is your car supposed to be on fire and we went out there had to break the windows and it was already on fire and totally ruined from any repair. I didn't receive a recall until a year after it had already caught on fire. The car is totaled in my backyard. And is beyond repair because of the fire

Passénger seat occupancy seat mat has failed and passenger air bag system does not work. Diagnosed recently- repair scheduled soon for cost of $1588.35 It looks like there may have been a recall in 2017 but I don’t have any record of being notified or having it fixed.

THE VEHICLE HAS AN UNEXPLAINED AND UNREPAIRABLE DEFECT RELATED TO THE MAIN AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT MODULE, BMW PART NUMBER 65779184432 (CURRENT VERSION); BELIEVE PART 65770394017 APPLIED TO MY VEHICLE AS-BUILT. THE CONTROL MODULE GENERATES INTERNAL CONTROL UNIT FAULT CODE 93D7. BOTH THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT AND SEATBELT LIGHT ARE CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATED. ACCORDING TO DEALER TECHNICIAN, THE CODE IS LOCKED IN AND CANNOT BE CLEARED. ADVICE PROVIDED WAS THAT THE UNIT CAN BE REPLACED AND THEN RECODED AT ESTIMATED COST OF APPROXIMATELY $2,000. IF A REPAIR CAN BE EFFECTUATED WITH AN UPDATED PART, THEN IT APPEARS THAT MY CAR AND PERHAPS ALL OTHER SIMILARLY AGED VEHICLES HAVE A DEFECTIVE MAIN AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT MODULE. A FAULTY AIRBAG MODULE WOULD BE A DEFECT IN A CRITICAL DEFECT IN A SAFETY SYSTEM'S PERFORMANCE THAT UNREASONABLY INCREASES RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY IN AN ACCIDENT. THE FAULT THUS POSES A RISK TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY. FURTHER, BASED ON OPENLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION, IT APPEARS THAT NUMEROUS OTHER VEHICLES HAVE SIMILAR, POTENTIALLY DEFECTIVE, MAIN AIRBAG CONTROL MODULES. FINALLY, IT APPEARS THAT BMW UPDATED THIS PART APPROXIMATELY 15 TIMES IN A 6-YEAR PERIOD, WHICH IS ABOUT DOUBLE THE UPDATE FREQUENCY FOR COMPARABLE VEHICLE--NOTING THAT THIS IS BASED ONLY ON MY LIMITED REVIEW. REGARDLESS, THAT DATA SUGGEST THAT BMW HAS HAD SOME AWARENESS THAT THE AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE HAD PERFORMANCE DIFFICULTIES. THANK YOU.

E90 BMW REVERSE LIGHT STOP WORKING DO TO CAR COMPUTER SYSTEM FAULT, THIS POSES A HIGH RISK WHEN VEHICLE IS IN REVERSE OTHER DRIVER ARE NOT NOTIFIED. THIS CAN CAUSE A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT.

PASSENGER RESTRAINT MALFUNCTION WARNING AND PASSENGER AIR BAG TURNED OFF

AFTER ~30 MIN DRIVING ON THE CAPITAL BELTWAY AROUND WASHINGTON DC, I EXISTED AT EXIT 4 ON I270 NORTH). THE ENGINE SUDDENLY EVOLVED VERY FAST WHEN I WAS BRAKING BEFORE A TRAFFIC LIGHT BETWEEN I270 RAMP AND FALLS ROAD. I FELT LIKE THE CAR JUST WANTED TO KEEP MOVING. I ENDED UP HITTING A VEHICLE IN THE FRONT THOUGH THE DAMAGES ON BOTH WERE VERY MINOR. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND PLACE IT IN PARK. AFTER A FEW MINUTES (THE OTHER DRIVER AND I EXCHANGED CONTACT INFO), I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND THE CAR SEEMED TO WORK OK.

THERE IS A PROBLEM REGARDING THE AIRBAG WARNING LAMP AND THE MRS SYSTEM. NHTSA RECALL 10025849 COVERS VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM 8/31/05 TO 4/26/06. MY CAR WAS PRODUCED IN 6/2006 (JUST TWO MONTHS LATER) AND IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM BUT IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL.

I CALLED BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS NOT IN THE RECALL AND IT WAS A COINCIDENCE THAT THE EXACT SAME PART MELTED, AS WHAT WAS BEING RECALLED FOR CARS BUILT ONLY TWO WEEKS LATER. I DON'T THINK SO. HOW CAN BMW SAY THAT BECAUSE MY CAR WAS BUILT TWO WEEKS PRIOR THAT THEY KNOW FOR A FACT, THAT A GOOD PCV VALVE WAS INSTALLED IN MY CAR? WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT THE BAD PCV VALVES ARE MELTING. AND I CAN CERTAINLY PROVE THAT MINE HAS MELTED. SO, A RESPONSIBLE COMPANY WOULD SEE THIS AS A SAFETY CONCERN AND NOT A COINCIDENCE. DOOR LOCK FAILURE. THIS IS VERY COMMON WITH THIS MODEL AND IT CAN BE ONE OF TWO THINGS; A FUSE OR THE DOOR ACTUATORS. I GOT IT BACK TO FIX ENGINE ISSUES AND THE DOORS WOULD NOT UNLOCK, EXCEPT THE DRIVERS SIDE, WHICH I CAN DO WITH THE KEY LOCK. OTHER THAN THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO GET IN THE CAR THAT DOESN'T INVOLVE GOING IN DUKE STYLE THROUGH THE WINDOW OR THROUGH THE SUNROOF OR SOMETHING.

I JUST HAD MY 2006 BMW 330I REPAIRED DUE TO A STEERING WHEEL LOCK WARNING LIGHT WHICH APPEARED ON THE ODOMETER CAUSING MY CAR NOT TO START.THIS OCCURRED WHEN I WAS READY TO LEAVE THE PARKING LOT AT MY JOB. THE CAR WOULD NOT START AND THE RED STEERING WHEEL LOCK WARNING LIGHT WAS ON THE ODOMETER. THE SHOP REPLACED THE BATTERY AND IBS SENSOR CABLE. I DROVE THE CAR FOR ONE DAY WITHOUT ANY WARNING SIGNAL AND WHEN I ADJUSTED THE STEERING COLUMN BY RELEASING THE LEVER, THE YELLOW STEERING WHEEL LOCK WARNING LIGHT LIT UP ON THE ODOMETER. THE REPAIRS COST ME $1,391.82. THIS CAR ALSO WAS IN THE SHOP DUE TO A RECALL ON THE AIRBAG ON THE STEERING COLUMN. A LOCAL BMW DEALERSHIP REPLACED THIS PART TWO MONTHS BEFORE THIS PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK OCCURRED. WHAT OTHER PROBLEMS WILL I HAVE WITH THIS BMW SERIES? I BELIEVE BMW SHOULD REFUND MY MONEY FOR THESE REPAIRS.

AIR BAG RECALL

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 BMW 330I. WHEN THE ENGINE WAS STARTED AND THE DEFROSTER WAS ACTIVATED, A POPPING NOISE WAS HEARD UNDER THE HOOD AND AN UNUSUAL ODOR EMITTED FROM THE VENTS. THE CONTACT IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND EXITED THE VEHICLE. WITHIN SECONDS, FLAMES APPEARED UNDER THE HOOD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. A FIRE REPORT AND A POLICE REPORT WERE FILED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FIRE SPREAD AND DAMAGED THE PLASTIC TAIL LIGHT COVER AND PAINT OF ANOTHER VEHICLE PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE NEAR THE MOTOR. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN FROM THE SCENE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. AN UNKNOWN DEALER STATED THAT PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V676000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING). THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

BLOWER TO HEATER/AIRCONDITIONING AND OVERHEATING. MOTOR MAKING LOUD SOUND WHEN AIR OR HEATER IS KN

AIR BAG CONTROL MODULATOR DIAGNOSED AS DEFECTIVE BY DEALER CAUSED AIR BAG WARNING LAMP AND PASSENGER AIR BAG LAMP TO ILLUMINATE. DEALER INFORMED THAT THE MODULATOR CONTROLS DEPLOYMENT OF AIRBAGS AND THE DEFECTIVE MODULATOR COULD CAUSE AIRBAGS TO NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, INCREASING RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY. THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES 30 SECONDS AFTER IGNITION INDICATING A DEFECT IN THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYMENT SYSTEM.

VERY LOUD NOISE (FAN NOISE) COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHEN THE CAR WAS STARTED FROM A COLD START. CAR IS DRIVE-ABLE BUT SEEMED TO LOSE SOME POWER. THE NOISE MAY OR MAY NOT COME BACK DURING THE NEXT START. A FEW SIMPLE SEARCHES ON GOOGLE AND FROM VARIOUS BMW FORUMS INDICATED THAT IT'S A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE 2006 BMW 330I E90 SEDANS AND PROBLEM SEEM TO BE THE FAULTY WATER PUMP AND FAULTY THERMOSTAT. AS THERE ARE NO WARNING LIGHT NOR ANY TELL SIGNS, THE CAR COULD GO FROM FULL PERFORMANCE ON THE FREEWAY TO LIMP MODE (FORCEFUL SLOW-DOWN MODE) IN THE MATTER OF A FEW SECONDS DUE TO OVERHEATING OF THE WATER PUMP, AND IT COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. THE HIDDEN ERROR CODES MAY BE DISCOVERED WITH A VEHICLE SPECIFIC SCANNING TOOL BUT THERE IS NO WARNING LIGHT OR ERROR LIGHT WHATSOEVER TO WARN THE OWNER UNLESS THE CAR IS BROUGHT IN TO THE SHOP AND BEING SCANNED WITH THE PROPER SCANNING TOOL. BUT IF THERE IS NO WARNING/ERROR LIGHT, NO ONE WOULD HAVE THOUGHT TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR SCANNING.
