Safety complaint: Sudden loss of steering control — 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 I own a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The truck had approximately 41,000 miles when this incident occurred. While driving and attempting to make a turn onto a side street, the steering suddenly locked up. I could not make the turn, creating a serious risk of a collision. Fortunately, there were no other vehicles on the road at that moment, and I avoided a crash. The truck was taken/towed to a Chevrolet dealership for diagnosis. The service manager advised me that the electrical ground connections had been checked and were functioning properly. The dealership concluded that the electric power steering module had failed and that the module could not be replaced separately. The proposed repair is replacement of the entire steering assembly, including parts, labor, and a front-end alignment, at an estimated cost of $2,500. The failure occurred at relatively low mileage. I am concerned that a sudden steering failure of this nature could cause a serious or fatal accident, particularly in traffic or at higher speeds. I am asking NHTSA to document this incident and evaluate whether this steering system failure may represent a safety defect affecting other vehicles. I can provide the dealer's diagnosis, repair estimate, vehicle identification number, and other supporting documentation. Part # 85844075 - $1,579.82 + tax Labor: 3.5 hrs (includes diag) - $670

Today I was trapped by 5 waymos on 15th between shotwell and south van ness in San Francisco. The first 3 stopped behind a delivery truck. I had to drive around the 4 vehicles to continue on 15th. As I passed another Waymo was in the oncoming lane, going around a delivery truck in the opposite direction (in my lane). The Waymo tried to back up, but another pulled up to get passengers, so waymos were taking up both lanes.

I was waiting to turn left at an intersection with my left blinker on and my foot on the brakes. Waymo behind me went around on the left side and made a right turn cutting me off. When I saw the Waymo coming around my side I creeped forward a few times and turned my wheel to make it clear my vehicle wasn't disabled but it continued forward and completed its turn. An oncoming turning vehicle with the right of way had to slow down for the Waymo because there wasn't enough space for three vehicles across the intersection.

On XXX at ~7:20 PM, I took a ride in Waymo autonomous vehicle 0397N4. The navigation system and mobile application failed to identify a severe pedestrian hazard, indicating the drop-off required a routine 4-minute walk without disclosing that the destination was cut off by a barely lit, high-speed thoroughfare. Waymo zeroed out the fare, indicating an implicit internal system flag of a trip failure. The vehicle executed a drop-off in a residential cul-de-sac in [XXX] abutting [XXX]. While the vehicle parked safely, the location functioned as an unmapped pedestrian trap. To reach my actual destination, I was forced to choose between crossing a heavily trafficked, barely lit 2-way thoroughfare at night with no crosswalk or pedestrian signals, or taking an unguided 10-minute walk in the barely lit environment to find a safe crossing point. At night, both choices presented an immediate physical safety risk. I contacted remote support upon arrival. Remote staff acknowledged the hazard and permitted me to remain inside the stationary vehicle while I attempted to hail a third-party rideshare, but they explicitly refused to remotely override the vehicle's routing or redirect it to a safe, walkable drop-off point. Remaining stationary in a barely lit area or walking down barely lit streets both felt entirely unsafe; consequently, after abandoning an initial attempt to call the police, I had to contact a deputy from my XXX Supervisor's office to assist in my safe extraction. On Wednesday, XXX, at 11:05:48am I observed [XXX] CA license number [XXX], make an illegal right turn from [XXX] to [XXX]. It turned from the right through lane instead of the right curb lane traveling to the left of a car turning right legally. There were six Ojais turning right, so I was surprised that they didn't recognize each other and let this one into the curb lane. I have dashcam video of the incident. No unusual pattern of severe incidents in the complaint record.

Complaint counts track how many cars were sold and how long they have been on the road as much as they track quality. A common model from 2013 has had a decade to accumulate reports; a rare one from last year has not. The signal worth weighing is in the severity columns, in whether the same component keeps appearing, and in whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.

Most recent recall on file: none. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation.
