2026 Volvo XC90PHEV

Defect. Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2023 Volvo C40 BEV, 2025 EC40, 2023-2024 XC40 BEV, 2020-2026 XC90 PHEV, 2022-2026 XC60 PHEV, 2023-2025 S60 PHEV, 2024-2025 V60 PHEV, and 2025-2026 EX40 and 2025 S90 PHEV vehicles. In certain driving scenarios while coasting down a hill and using "B" mode or "One Pedal Drive," the vehicle may lose brake function.

Risk. A loss of brake function increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy. Owners are advised not to use "B" Mode (for plug-in hybrid vehicles) or "One Pedal Drive" (for pure electric vehicles) until the repair has been completed. The brake module software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 15, 2025. Owners may contact Volvo Car's customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10329.

On July 27, 2026, I was driving my 2026 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid at approximately 70 mph on the highway with 2,160 miles on the odometer. Without warning, a turtle-mode indicator illuminated and the vehicle's speed was electronically limited, dropping from 70 mph to approximately 50 mph while in moving traffic. A "Propulsion System - Service Required" message appeared along with the check engine light. At the same time the air conditioning stopped cooling; the high-voltage electric A/C compressor had lost power. Ambient temperature was 88F. The vehicle was towed to an authorized Volvo dealer. The dealer contacted the Volvo technical hotline and found fault code P0A7A00, an internal fault in the Inverter Generator Module (IGM). The IGM was replaced. On recheck, the dealer found the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) also had an internal fault and a shorted wire. The ISG was replaced and the hybrid system recalibrated. The vehicle was out of service for repair from July 27, 2026 to September 17, 2026 - 52 days. It had been delivered new on May 4, 2026, approximately 12 weeks before the failure. All work was performed under warranty. No crash or injury resulted. However, the unanticipated loss of motive power at highway speed created a serious risk of being struck from behind. Had this occurred on a stretch with no shoulder or in heavy traffic, the outcome could have been different. The contact owns a 2026 Volvo XC90 PHEV. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal odor inside the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact refused to drive the vehicle due to the abnormal odor. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact rented a vehicle for a while to go to scheduled appointments. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 500.

Within 4 weeks of a brand new Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV, the backup camera would not display picture when put in reverse gear potentially leading to a fatal crash. This was fixed by switching off the vehicle for five minutes and back on. This was a known recall with XC90 2021-2025 models with campaign number 25V282000. This appears to be a persistent issue in the 2026 model year as well.
