The overhead console hangs down with wires blocking my rearview mirror and creating a blind spot on the right mirror. Volkswagon in Colorado told me that the console replacement part is on a national back order with no ETA at the time. My safety and the safety of others are put at risk because the overhead console swings while I am driving, which is a major distraction. I have to use one hand to keep the overhead console where it's supposed to be so I'm driving with one hand. Additionally, it blocks my view to my right mirror, impeding me from doing lane changes. Yes, it's been confirmed in writing from my local dealer and they are well aware of this problem because it's occurring all over the US with 2020 VW Tiguan cars. Check out this website: [XXX] Yes, my Volkswagen dealer has inspected it, however, they did not repair it because they did not have the console part. No, there were no warnings--it happened suddenly and by itself. The overhead console is made of cheap plastic and likely started dangling due to the summer heat waves which weakened the console. 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2020 record →
I currently reside in Texas where it get HOT during the summer months. I recently got this car back in May. Recently when it’s hot outside my car had cut off one day in traffic and said please check starter system. All electrical components of the car shut off completely. The engine will start run. But the AC, lights, back up camera, windows stop working. I have an appt to drop the car off at the dealership. I been seeing this is an ongoing problem for. VW vehicles I have seen multiple stories about this happening mainly in 2019-2020 jettas. This needs to be an investigation on VW and this problem.
The center overhead console fell down (controls dome lights, sunroof, & other convenience features). Thankfully, no one was driving but it could have caused a serious issue if we had been. Many other VW Tiguan owners have experienced this issue, sometimes multiple times.
I came out of the Walmart and got into my car and the Overhead Console was Detached hanging by electrical cords in front of the rear view mirror. Drove to the Antwerpen delership before they closed and was informed it detached due to HEAT????? Seriously, heat! Have an appointment on 08/07/2024. It appears this is happening alot around the US. Google it
The overhead console fell down and was hanging by the cables connected to it which control the sunroof motor, SOS system, Info button, rear interior lights and driver/passenger dome lights. It hangs between driver and passenger at roughly 4 inches from the roof and obscures peripheral vision and usage of the rear-view mirror. Finally, if it occurred while driving it could easily have caused an accident.
The interior overhead panel fell down when the car was parked in the garage. There have already been a lot of owners complaining the same issue on VW's forum: [XXX] There was no any incident that may cause this prior to this. It looks to be the bolts attaching the console were over-torqued. If this happened during the drive, it posted hazard to the driver because there will be a hanging panel blocking the driver's vision. We went to the VW yearly maintenance and nothing was done to fix the issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
As you own the car for three years, my overhead panel on the roof of the car has attached itself from the car and is hanging in front of the rearview mirror by the cords. There’s also affected the GPS and electrical in the vehicle.
My 2020 Tiguan was purchased used about 10 months ago. We moved from RI to CA and the overhead console has completely fallen down and is hanging by the wiring harnesses. I have contacted the dealer and corporate. They do not want to make the repair because it is out of warranty. Upon further investigation It appears that this is a common issue effecting many other 2020-2023 VW Tiguans. This is a safety concern as it obstructs my view from the rearview mirror as well as my line of sight out the windshield. I have a newborn child and bought this car because of the reliability and safety features. A separate issue, but there was a class action lawsuit pertaining to the EBS (Emergency breaking system) not functioning properly. This has not been the best experience and I thought VW would stand behind their product, sadly this has not been the case.
I am writing to report a serious safety concern regarding my Volkswagen Tiguan 2020. The dome light in my vehicle has completely broken off, melting the plastic from the screws, and was hanging by the electrical wires. This issue poses multiple safety hazards: 1.Injury Risk: While driving, the dome light unlatched and fell and struck me on the side of my head, causing a distraction and injury. 2.Visibility Obstruction: When the dome light is hanging, it completely blocks the view through the windshield and rearview mirror, significantly increasing the risk of an accident. I have taken my vehicle to the dealership, and they confirmed that this is a common problem with this model. They have seen and replaced the dome light on many other vehicles of the same model. Despite this being a known issue, there were no warning lights or indicators to alert me to the impending failure. This indicates that the parts used are faulty and pose a significant safety risk. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue promptly and consider issuing a safety recall for Volkswagen Tiguan 2020 vehicles to prevent potential accidents and injuries. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter.
There is an overhead controls console for the interior light, emergency phone and sunroof. This console is above the interior rearview mirror. This console broke away on its own and is dangling by three wires. It blocks the rearview mirror. I can see that the bracket which you bolt to secure it in place is very flimsy plastic and has broken. The console is rather heavy and I was surprised that it would even be attached with a plastic bracket. It's a safety hazard because you can't use the rearview mirror and your vision out the passenger side window is obstructed. My local VW honored the warranty but it still should be addressed with a better fix for this.
SOS button is erroring out. It won't reset back to green is staying red and showing Error: Emergency call function. This is a known issue see attached error on my vehicle and a few screen shots others have reported on different blogs.
When the car is parked under the Sun on hot days. The car will lose the power and we get message on Dashboard "Check Starter System" When this happens and car is running, it will lose power, No AC, No Lights, No Brake Lights, No Hazard Lights, Speedometer will not work but Engine is running and you can drive the car. It is extremely dangerous to drive it that way. Some folks reported that replacing faulty ignition switch resolve the issue but it needs to be properly investigated and issue official recall on all VW models which are experiencing the issue. Its on VW Tiguan, Golf, Jetta for sure. Please see the video of issue [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Tiguan overhead sunroof/bluetooth control console detached and fell down on its own and was hanging by wires. No one was in the car. Very dangerous if it had happened when driving. Had to drive it to dealer by rigging a bungee cord and paper clips to hold it up at least a few inches. Another problem is an ongoing moldy smell in the car especially when rainy or humid. I do not see any leaking of water.
The contact owns a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the center console had detached and struck the contact on the head. There were no serious injuries sustained; however, the contact stated a red mark was left on his head. The contact was concerned that the failure could recur while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the diagnostic test result was not disclosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000. The VIN was not included.
We purchased car two weeks ago. Twice the engine has shut off while driving down a hill. The warnings say "Check the starter system" and "Ignition Switched Off". There was one warning about the starter system being deactivated or something like that. After the first time we brought it back to dealership. They couldn't diagnose. They found something with AC and took care of that. The car drove for a week and then it happened again. Both times it has happened after being parked for a couple of hours and both times it happened while driving down a hill. 2020 Volkewagen Tiguan with about 56k miles.
VW needs to handle this situation or I will be hiring a lawyer for a class action lawsuit. There are tons of people who are or have experienced what I’m experiencing with my Tiguan. White mold all through the middle seat carpet due to the floor air vents pushing air directly under the heavy mats that have no way for air to circulate out of. Heavy condensation has built up and there is a heavy presence of white mold through both sides. This is the 2nd time I have sent in a complaint regarding this HUGE health issue and design flaw. It is a huge risk to my health, my children’s health, and every other person who is dealing with this as well. I have found an abundance of people who have posted photos and shared their white mold flooring issue online. I have supplied photos to show the extensive damage it has done to my car.
Overhead console which controls lights, sunroof, garage opener, just FELL DOWN. You can see where the glue and the plastic surrounding the screws holding the console up failed and cracked. Console has never been altered, is rarely touched except for light buttons as I don't like to open roof and my garage opener is on my phone. I don't have kids who could have messed with it. VW is refusing to cover cost of its repair as my 4 year warranty ended 16 days ago. If I had been driving while it happened, It would have caused an accident.
The headliner control panel just falls which distracts the driver as well as all forward safety components fail to respond. I feel it is dangerous as this is extremely distracting
The motor mounts failed and need to be replaced, the car has never been in an accident or even driven in harsh conditions. There is another part that failed in the engine which causes it to leak oil. The vehicle has a hard time accelerating intermittently.
SOS warning light malfunction, cannot make call to emergency services; was told it is a module that needs to be replaced for over $1000 dollars. Forums and chatrooms state this is a wide spread issue. Dealership does not deem to replace due to out of warranty. Malfunctioned while it WAS in warranty, was not only reset and the light would malfunction light would turn on after a few days. While driving vehicle spontaneously shuts off with the following warnings "ignition system off. Pull over safely", "Check starter". This has occurred more than once when I was traveling over 50 mph and could have led to a severe crash if I were not fortunate enough to have minimal traffic in the area at the time. I have brought it into the dealer and they were unable to identify the cause. Instead, they replaced the battery and front right speed sensor. The problem of my vehicle spontaneously shutting off has only persisted on 4 more occasions after this visit to the dealer.
I am getting 2 warning messages- fault electronic parking brake and error driver door contact switch. The car seems to think my door is open and therefore turns on the emergency brake for safety. This has happened when I am parked and also when I am driving.
Please see attached documents
We bought the vehicle one year ago from Carvana. There are air vents under the front two seats which blows cold air underneath the 2nd row floor mats. This creates condensation and produces a bunch of mold and mildew. My flooring/carpet is now covered in mildew and mold with a very bad odor. We could not figure out where it was coming from until I finally lifted the floor mats. This is a very poor design and will make people sick which will lead to lawsuits.
The car was jerking due to a faulty transmission sensor. VW instructed the dealership to clean and reinsert the old sensor, which they state is an appropriate first step. Several days later, the cleaned part failed and caused the car to jerk and stop responding while I was driving. This jerking caused the car behind me to come very close to rear-ending me. I am concerned that VW is putting old parts back in warrantied cars, which are already known to have jerking transmission problems, to run out of the warranty. With this policy, they are putting drivers, passengers, and other cars on the road in danger.
I am unaware of how to properly name the problem on this vehicle, but it is the panel that controls the sunroof/moon roof. It has fallen out of place on two occasions. The second time and the major cause for concern is because it happened while I was driving. And that is a safety hazard because it startled me and it easily could have cause me to swerve and wreck into someone or something. Also, if you aren’t able to get this issue fixed immediately it is dangling, wires/cords exposed and causes an unclear view of the rear view mirror. It constantly swings when you’re driving and can be a great distraction if you’re trying to keep it from swinging so much from hitting the driver, or just coming detached period and possible causing some electrical issues and possible injury. This problem has been taken to my local dealership twice and addressed, and dealership has stated that it will only repair as a courtesy twice. This isn’t a consumer wear and tear issue, it is clearly a defect from the manufacturer and poor construction of this component in the vehicle. This defect has only been inspected and repaired by the local dealership, I do not believe it has been escalated to the manufacturer for review. There was no prior warning to this panel falling, it just fell suddenly, without warning. After researching other online forums on this specific vehicle and the problem there are many consumers online with this same issue and some has had the issue occur more than others. This is no
Hit head on by other vehicle and airbags did not deploy.
An update was pushed to the safety emergency response system for VW vehicles better known as Carnet. The update has caused the emergency safety response system to be disabled and now that the car is out warranty the dealership is requiring the owners to pay to repair the module out of pocket although the functionality malfunction was due to the update pushed out by Volkswagon.
Driving on the interstate with the windshield defrost on due to the winter weather coming from Texas into Arkansas and the in car electrical turned off and the dash screen said “check starter system” and then told us to safely park the vehicle. All electronics in the car turned off but the car system was still going. I was able to drive the car to an exit and park all with the dash and infotainment system shut off. Thankfully the steering wheel didn’t lock.
The contact owns a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that water was entering the rear seat of the vehicle. The contact stated that the water intrusion had caused a short circuit in the vehicle and the vehicle was driving with Reduced Engine power. The contact stated that the water intrusion also disrupted the Bluetooth functionality. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the gateway control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V947000 (Electrical System, Structure). The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
Fuel door gets stuck intermittently. Have to bang on the side of the car to have it released
Overhead console detached dropped down while driving, yes available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? created hazard for front seat occupants. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No
Since the day I bought this car from the dealer (who stated oil change should be every 10K miles), the car's engine oil light goes on every 5-6 months. This is a new car and never goes past 6-7K miles on the engine. I believe there is an engine oil consumption problem with these type of vehicles. This is a safety hazard. Additionally, it is unheard of to have to replace oil in a brand new car in the 21st century every 5-6 months. Please help me with this. I am still making car payments on a car that is flawed!
Center console fell from headliner. Thankfully it did not happen while I was driving which may have caused an accident. Safety would have created a visual hazard that would have impaired driving. Many other VW owners of the similar year, make and model have taken to the internet to share the exact same issue. The service dept at the dealership I go to said they have seen quite a few of these issues for this vehicle. There was no warning for this. The garage door opener component had become less responsive over the past few months but did not relate this to being a connected issue until today.
The roof console (the console that controls the sunroof) detached overnight and was dangling at eye level by a couple wires. It cracked right at the screws. My guess is it has to do with heat resistance and thin plastic. If this had happened while driving, it would have been an immediate and serious safety hazard as it would have blocked my line of sight through the windshield. A quick Google search reveals what seems to be a common issue that's occurred in nearly identical manners: https://www.volkswagenownersclub.com/threads/2020-tiguan-overhead-console-detached.130458/
While I was driving the overhead center console that houses the driver and passenger interior lights, sunroof control, and mobile device microphone fell out of the ceiling. This was due to heat melting the plastic. The screws used to hold the console are metal and the summer heat melted the plastic causing the console to fall. This happened once in 2021 and was replaced with the same console. In 2022 the same issue happened. The dealer inspected it but does not have the parts to repair it. The item has been on back order for a year with no resolve. This item falling out of the ceiling while driving was a major safety issue and could have caused an incident. I had to try and hold it up while getting safely to my destination. The dealer said this has been a common issue with my VW vehicles and I was out on a waitlist for repair.
There is a malfunction with the emergency SOS system. I have an error message.
Puts key in ignition stays on and suddenly shuts off and says check starter system
There is a major lag in acceleration. It happens randomly so taking to a dealership won’t help because they will only try one time then say they can’t reproduce the problem. From a stop or turning into a lane I can have the pedal to the floor and the car just stalls and doesn’t go. After a few seconds the car finally gets a boost then goes. Well personally those seconds could lead to a car hitting me. I have asked my local dealership many times about it and they don’t seem to care or want to look into a problem. The idea of a car is hit pedal and it goes but not the Tiguan. There is a known problem and this should be fixed. This has been going on since I purchased car. Just getting tired of this situation.
The auto break feature will illuminate on the dashboard and then send my car to a screeching halt. It takes me on average 5 seconds to regain control of my brakes. It has happened exiting businesses (small curbs) but also on the main streets with no one else around going upwards of 45 mph. The infotainment system that houses the parking and rear view safety features as well as navigation also does not work when the car is left outside in weather above 80 degrees. The AC is also unable to cool when the weather is above 80 degrees all of these ‘safety features’ make the car dangerous.
On the panoramic sunroof, the back portion (moonroof) exploded on its own. Car was parked outside in parking lot and when came back to car after couple of hours, the whole back panel had been cracked and entire moonroof shattered (with glass fragments also inside car). The break was caving out (glass curved upwards) as if broken from inside. Unknown how this happened but temperature wasn’t too hot either to cause explosion from extreme heat.
Just took my 2020 VW Tiguan in for routine maintenance and was told that my rear brake pads and rotors were down to 3&4 millimeters and had to be replaced. The front brakes were both at 8 millimeters and are fine. This appears to be a very strange wear pattern in that front brakes should take the most pressure. If the rear brakes brake harder than the front it could cause loss of control and “fishtailing “.
While just start the car and drive it for 2 or 3 minutes a loud alarm sound and my dash lit up in red saying "BRAKE BOOSTER FAULTY" the car brakes feel week and two minutes later it disappear and the brake returns to normal. my mechanic said that it is something that only the dealership can fix because it looks like a problem that must to be recalled. it is a safety issue that can lead to an accident on the freeway.
The contact owns a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated upon depression of the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and Schumacher Volkswagen of West Palm Beach (3001 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL 33409) and the contact was informed that the mechanics were unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
The overhead console broke and fell, dangling by wires only. It became a hazard inside the vehicle as it blocked visibility and swung inside with the possibility of hurting someone. I called VW customer care and they refused to acknowledge this issue and stated since the vehicle was 1000 miles over warranty limit (though still based on age, as < 3 years) there was nothing they could do.
The vehicle burns oil. When the dealer was confronted they said it was “normal” for the car to burn half a quart of oil every 2000 miles. No oil stains on the ground. The engine is burning the oil.
I noticed a stinky smell in my car a few months ago but didn't think anything of it, I thought maybe one of my sons left gym shoes way in back and it left a stench. My husband was cleaning my car out and noticed that there was white stuff on the floor behind the driver side. He instantly takes the car to get detailed but the smell still lingered. Two months later the white stuff is on the carpet again he removed the matts and knew it was the exact same problem that it was growing mold! Disgusting! He tried keeping the car clean, the carpet clean and fresh but the smell isn't going away. We eventually took the car to a VW dealership near us where they said they couldn't find a leak or anything that would cause this issue. They didn't clean the floor or even try to resolve the issue, so we then reached out to the VW dealership where we purchased the car. We took the car in only for them to tell us they couldn't find a problem, therefore they can't honor our warranty. After searching through the internet to my surprise this is an ongoing problem with this vehicle and it's obvious that VW would know about this problem after so many complaints. I'm furious and frustrated with this issue because mold is extremely serious and I ride in this vehicle every day and no telling what health issues could come from this. Instead of VW pretending there isn't a problem they can just fix the issue and replace the carpet, however they want to be difficult.
Transmission shifts hard while going up and down. The traffic back assist will alert when not moving and when in a parking space and when nothing is around
ERC code popped up on Dashboard while driving in 2021 and the vehicle wouldn't go over 30 mph. Took it to the Volkswagen dealership in November 2021. Between November and February of 2022, I took the vehicle back, after having it for less than 2 hours, with the same ongoing issue. Started having the same issues after the final pick up. Fast forward to November of 2022, in addition to the ERC, my vehicle battery drained and I am unable to start the car unless I jump start it. Replaced the battery and still the same issue. The battery does not stay charged and it is a brand new battery.
The contact owns a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the contact turned on the windshield washer fluid to clean the front and rear windshield and the windshield washer fluid leaked into the vehicle onto the brake and accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the windshield washer fluid level was low. The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted, and the manufacturer stated that there was no recall for the failure and that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The manufacturer filed a case. The failure mileage was 60,000.

NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
