Defect. Triumph is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Street Triple, Street Triple R, and Daytona 675 motorcycles. The regulator/rectifier can overheat and prevent the motorcycle from charging. Once the battery is fully discharged, the motorcycle may stall.

Risk. If the motorcycle stalls, there is an increased risk of a crash leading to personal injury.

Remedy. Triumph will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the regulator/rectifier, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on, or before October 12, 2012. Owners may contact Triumph customer service department at 1-678-854-2010.

I RECENTLY EXPERIENCED A MOTORCYCLE FIRE LIKELY CAUSED BY THE RECALL ISSUE WHILE STARTING MY MORNING COMMUTE. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO NOTICE THE SMOKE SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING MY HOME JUST BEFORE GETTING ON THE FREEWAY. I WAS WEARING A HELMET CAMERA AND I HAVE INCLUDED THE YOUTUBE VIDEO OF THE EVENT BELOW. 4 YEARS AGO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE PRESCRIBED RECALL FIX ON THE REGULATOR/RECTIFIER. THE WIRE FROM WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN THE SOURCE OF THIS FIRE. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME BECAUSE THE WORK HAD BEEN DONE, TRIUMPH WOULD NOT REPAIR THIS ISSUE. MY CONCERN IS A MOTORCYCLE SHOULD NEVER CATCH ON FIRE AND THIS DEFINITELY APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW. IF I HAD NOT NOTICED IT WHEN I DID I MIGHT NOT BE HEAR TO WRITE THIS REPORT. I WAS RIDING MY MOTORCYCLE WHEN IT SUDDENLY DIED. I COULDN'T RESTART IT. MY BUDDY BROUGHT AN OHMS TESTER AND SAID THE BATTERY WASN'T BEING CHARGED. WE HAD THE VEHICLE DROPPED OFF AT A DEALERSHIP FOR MAINTENANCE. WHEN I GOT HOME I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND A SAFETY RECALL CAME UP, RM2012/019, FOR THE EXACT PROBLEM THAT HAPPENED TO MY BIKE. ITS A FAULTY REGULATOR RECTIFIER. I CONTACTED TRIUMPH USA AND THEY SAID BECAUSE I BROUGHT MY BIKE FROM OVERSEAS (IM RETIRED USAF), THAT THE SAFETY RECALL DIDN'T APPLY TO ME, AND THAT ANY REPAIRS WOULD BE OUT OF MY POCKET. HOW IS THAT FAIR? I'VE REGISTERED IT HERE IN THE STATES, AND THE EXACT PROBLEM IT WAS RECALLED FOR IS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BIKE. *TR
