Gas tank does not open. There’s a button that you press and sounds like it’s jammed. I went through the trunk to pull the yellow handle (looked online and seen others have this issue also) and it does not work on my car. I have to have someone press the button while I use my keys to go on the side to push it open.
2020 Toyota Camry complaints
Owner reports filed with NHTSA about this vehicle, newest first and reproduced as filed. They are unverified accounts: one proves nothing, and a pattern across many is the thing worth reading. Back to the full 2020 record →
The vehicle has a parasitic electrical drain that has lead to my wife being stranded twice.
Brakes peddle drops to low. brakes are spongy. similar to recall NHTSA campaign number: 21V890
A car turned in front of my daughter and her boyfriend. They were going 40 MPH and there is severe damage to the front of the vehicle. The car will be totaled. Not one air bag deployed. All first responders were very surprised and cautious that even them exiting the damaged vehicle could set them off. They were told "not to move" until they could investigate a safe way for them to leave the car.
I purchased my Toyota Camry 2020 in 2021. I am at 56k miles and my car hasn’t started up without a jump for three weeks now. Car battery and alternator checked in excellent condition but somehow battery always drained. Found out that there was a bulletin back in 2020 on this issue that I was never made aware of so now I’m past 36 and Toyota states I have to pay for the update needed to keep my car running which is ridiculous because had I received this update upon purchase in 2021 this wouldnt have happened. This car is brand new and for them to say I have to pay for this Issue they have neglected to take care of is unfair. There should be a class action suit against Toyota for this.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the front end of the vehicle made abnormal exploding sounds and there was smoke coming from under the hood. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the battery had exploded, and the battery was replaced. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Pre-collision Warning Malfunction” was intermittently displayed. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving on another occasion, the message "Maintenance Required" and messages indicating the Pre-collision, Anti-Lock and ABS malfunction, and to contact the nearest dealer were displayed. The contact also stated that an alarm persistently sounded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the failure was due to rodents damaging electrical wires. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion, and the mechanic determined that the failure was caused by the acidic residues that remained in the hood after the battery explosion. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer to be repaired. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 74,480.
Car has a fuel pump or fuel system and Central Florida Toyota has not fixed it even after taking it 2 times to the dealership.
2020 Camry has 34000 miles and the engine maintenance required comes on. The dealer says it is the coolant bypass valve. They will replace it but after looking online there are many reports of this happening to toyotas with low mileage. Coolant can corrode the electric components.
Engine: Fault Code P268115 - Engine Coolant Bypass Valve Control Circuit/Open: Circuit Short To Battery or Open. This is a huge ongoing problem with Toyota vehicles. You can do a simple search and find 100s of people with the same issue. This must be addressed and a recall issued for repair.
Incident: Just driving along when all of a sudden, the car engine turned off and check engine light came on along with warnings about brake system failures, fuels system failures and message to contact your dealer. Any attempts to restart the car failed. The vehicle was a 2020 toyota camry xse with 75000 miles. The vehicle was inoperable. CAUSE: There is a small air intake resonator box that connects to the air flow between the air filter compartment and the throttle. This resonator is made of plastic and the part that connects to the airflow main tube, had cracked and broken off and the broken piece got stuck in the throttle causing the vehicle to become disabled. This part is never touched when performing air filter maintenance and it was determined that over time, it just cracked and eventually broke off. This is a defect in the design and if this had happened at highway speeds could have had serious consequences.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, unknown warning lights started flashing on the instrument panel. The vehicle started losing motive power and became difficult to control and pulled to the center lane unintendedly. The contact stated that moments later the failures ceased, and the vehicle started to operate as intended. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. Recently the failure reoccurred, and the dealer determined that the failure was caused by a faulty battery. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 32,000.
I was driving the car without any issue or problem. All of a sudden the sunroof glass shuttered. It sounded like a blast. When I stopped the car, the sunroof was broken to small pieces.
Sunroof and its now at the shop for repair. My safety was put at risk if because it sound as a gunshot and could have cause me to swerve into another line. If the sunroof had been open the glass could of cut me. unknown if the problem has been reproduced or confirmed. it has been inspected by the shop that's doing the repair. No warnings at all. I was traveling down the road and heard something that sounded like a gun shot. It then sounded like a window was open. Once I got home I inspected my car and pulled back the shade and realize the sunroof was shattered in pieces. If I had my sunroof open the glass could of fell in on me. I called my insurance company and they didn't inspected but ordered parts to fix it. They originally told me it would be a 0 dollar deductible. Now the car is in the shop to be repaired, I'm told they found other things and I would have to pay a $500 deductible now.
My dash constantly makes this buzzing sound coming around the center of the dash. It is highly distracting and has almost caused me multiple incidents trying to stop the noise and find out where exactly it’s coming from. Yes it’s been reproduced by others.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was hesitating while accelerating. The contact stated that the transmission was skipping gear with the gear selector erroneously indicating that the transmission was in neutral while driving. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the transmission wiring harness was faulty. The wiring harness was replaced but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 15,780. The consumer stated she no longer has possession of the vehicle.
Coolant bypass valve My check engine light turns on when the AC is activated. I took it to my dealership on 5/22/2023 and was informed there’s a back order on the coolant bypass valve because it is a national issue. My car has been determined as unsafe to drive until the part can be replaced in 2-3 weeks.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that all four doors on the vehicle failed to lock or unlock as needed. The contact stated that the failure initially started with the rear passenger’s side door after the door failed to unlock with the key fob. The contact attempted to unlock the door with the button on the driver side door, but the doors failed to open. The failure then occurred with all four doors, with an abnormal squeaking sound coming from the doors while attempting to unlock the doors. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed her that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Did not happen to this vehicle, but others the same year. I am a tech who has seen multiple failures of the crankshaft position plate which is mounted between the flywheel and crankshaft brake causing engine to shut down while driving due to crank position sensor not receiving signal. I am concerned because my wife drives one which is the vin I gave, that her car may cut off in traffic causing a accident. This part is defective with holes cut around it where the new replacement part is solid. This should be replaced at no cost to customers when vehicle warranty coverage has run out. Information below is for a vehicle that I worked on and have seen 3 others. One resulting in engine & transmission replacement due to excessive damage from plate coming apart. I work for Toyota & don't want my identity shared with them.
Shortly after purchase, the air conditioner smells moldy. The filter has been replaced, yet the unpleasant mold smell is still there. The dealer ignores my complaints. I am allergic to mold, and it has triggered my asthma, and I am now using an inhaler while driving my passenger car, which can cause an accident. Please look into this problem which has been reported for years as I researched this apparent over site. I love the automobile otherwise.
Unknown. Not sure is the alignment, or steering wheel. The issue is been reported to The insurance, body shop, and Toyota. The car is not safe on the road. And I believe it shouldn’t on the road. The car also been I car accident on the highway before. The car is parked . I haven’t drove the car . Since I don’t feel safe driving the car. I
Several times when I was driving without cruise control down the hill from our home, the car's automatic brake turned on when I passed another car. The car incorrectly sensed that I was going to hit or be hit by the passing car and the automatic emergency brake turned on. Nothing happened except I was startled and puzzled. I was driving less than 30 mph on a residential street.
Car is just above 36 k and gave me engine light on not wanting to turn the engine on . I called a mechanic to stop by and maybe reset the computer …so much I know(the dash board was giving me a hybrid system failure) but the reader said its fuel pump control circuit low ,witch on the other hand is not allowing the car to start of and somehow related to the vehicle stability module and break system not mentioning a solenoid problem as well…
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was vibrating. The vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist, who diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where the transmission mounts were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.
While driving the Camry at 45 mph among the flow of traffic on a state highway in Florida, out of the blue the vehicle's speedometer on the instrument cluster was replaced with a flashing red box and the brakes applied themselves fully with no command or input given whatsoever. The Camry immediately screeched to a stop in the middle of the road within a couple seconds, causing the vehicle behind me to slam into the Camry at full speed. There were no other vehicles or obstacles ahead of me at all, this fact was also observed by witnesses. The automation had triggered for no apparent reason, overriding my control of the Camry and stopping it in the middle of a major highway, causing the accident. Despite the intensity of the crash, the air bags of the vehicle failed to deploy in the impact, worsening the severity of my injuries. Both the Camry and the other motorist's car were rendered inoperable and totaled in the accident, they had to be towed from the scene. The police ruled the cause of the accident to be vehicular malfunction of the Camry.
My engine maintenance light go to dealer came on. Not for the oil change. I went to have my code ready and it said fuel pump. I usually get 340 to 350 on a full tank. Now I’m get like 305…302….and I smell gas.
My sunroof exploded with outward shards for no apparent reason while driving so an impact from road debris seem unlikely. Dealer.inspected and says it's not a warranty issue and to file a comprehensive claim with my insurance. I have read that exploding sunroofs are a problem with some Toyotas. But Toyota refuses to address the problem. Thankfully as startling as the incident was it didn't make me have an accident but could see others may not be so lucky
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry XLE. The contact stated while driving approximately 26 MPH, an 18-wheeler vehicle crashed into the rear of his vehicle twice. The air bags failed to deploy and the seat belts failed to engage. The message "Air Bag System Malfunction" was displayed. The contact sustained whiplash and hit his head against the steering wheel. The contact sought medical assistance the next day and was diagnosed with a herniated disk and torn muscles in the back. As a result, the contact had undergone left shoulder surgery. The contact's sister sustain whiplash, hit her head and face against the passenger's side door and sustained soreness and bruises on the right side of her face. The emergency units transported the contact's sister to the hospital where she received medical assistance. A police report was filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to his residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for air bags and seat belt failure. The contact stated that the event data recorder (EDR) indicated that the vehicle had only sustained one impact; however, the vehicle had sustained two impacts as it was rear-ended twice. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance or explanation for the erroneous report of the event data recorder (EDR). The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.
Two instances of parking the 2020 Toyota Camry and electrical system going "dead" within 24-36 hours. Battery drained/unable to enter via FOB/unable to start vehicle. Car maintenance and inspection occurred in November 2, 2022. Testing of battery by Toyota Service Center confirmed battery was not issue and worked as normal. Battery less than two years old. Overall safety was not at risk, as car was parked in garage during both instances (March 2022/November 2022). Problem was not able to be reproduced. No warnings were given prior to either event by warning lamps/messages.
The contact owned a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 50 MPH, he crashed into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact suffered injuries to both shoulders and his back but did not seek medical treatment. The other driver was injured and transported to the hospital for an injury to his back. A police report was filed. The vehicle was initially towed to an independent tow yard and then towed to a collision center. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and a claim was filed. The vehicle was deemed a total loss and was destroyed. The failure mileage was 8,446
The tire size is 215/55R17. Within a span of 10 months, THREE of my tires have needed to be replaced, with one of them almost causing me a very serious car accident. The issue appears to be with the sidewall failing. The first time this happened was in September of 2021. I brought the defective tire to a local Bridgestone retail center and my complaint/concerns were completely dismissed by the in-store employee and corporate. The employee contacted corporate on the phone and was told there were no recalls on my Specific tires. The employee insisted that because there was no current “recall,” my tire was not defective. He also stated that I should “trust him” because he’s “been in the business for 25+ years”. Even though there was NO nail or sharp object found, Bridgestone had insisted that I must have ran over something. Relying on their knowledge and response in this matter, I went ahead and purchased the same exact tire at BJs wholesale club. ( I even took the tire to Toyota for inspection and they couldn’t find anything lodged in the tire or evidence to indicate that I ran over any object. They were completely baffled.) Approximately 2 months ago, a second tire had a very similar issue occur out of nowhere. It happened when I was not even a five minute drive from my house. Yet again, the issue was with the sidewall. The tire was damaged beyond repair and I had to get the “donut” put on so that I could drive my car to a tire center to purchase a new tire. Then (not even two
Battery runs down if vehicle is not driven every few days. I did not drive the car for three days and battery was totally dead when i tried to start car. Some unknown current draw runs the battery down. Depending where a person is this could be a safety matter.
Front bumper and side view mirror cover (passenger side) have been badly deformed with in past few months and getting worse for a vehicle which is still under warranty (~2 year old and under 36,000 miles). Side view mirror cover (driver side) has also started to deform. Side view mirror cover (passenger side) has been deformed to an extent that a slight hand touch or push detaches it from the vehicle body which means it can become falling or flying object when vehicle is in motion and cause safety hazard. Parts are available for inspection (pictures are also attached). I claimed the manufacturer warranty through a local Toyota dealership and after sending me from one dealership to another, my warranty claim was denied based on the reason that deformation is possibly due to heat reflection which is an outside influence. Other than taking pictures, dealership and manufacturer have not tried to replicate the failure of parts. Dealership & Manufacturer have also failed to rule out any safety issues due to deformed components. As a Toyota customer and vehicle owner, I am highly concerned about (1) If front bumper will function under deformed conditions as it is designed to function and will not cause any safety issues to the vehicle and its occupants (2) Deformed components (One of side view mirror is already started to detach) will not completely detach and become safety hazard. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate this matter which looks like a product failure and should be cove
Acceleration felt weird when is performed from full stop or moderate speed to a “chase” speed (high revolutions), it doesn’t respond according to the action taken to the gas pedal. Also the crash sensor went off from time to time.
Fuel pump failure 1st. Car immediately stopped while driving on main road almost causing collision, engine light appeared only. Car had been inspected by local repair codes identify fuel pump malfunction. Fuel pump was replaced . Car was driven less than 5 minutes and overheated. Overheating light on dashboard , exclamation light and engine light appeared. reason is still yet unknown.
Car is regularly maintained, vehicle had to be what was a software or fuel supply issue. In hotter weather car stutters and engine will completely shut off while driving. It will begin to throw errors for second brake system malfunction, check engine, lane departure assist. Codes from obd2 read p12d5 and p107d. Seems like fuel stops is being cut off or extreme software issue. Regardless it has left my pregnant wife and 3 yr old son stranded in the middle of the road in 100 degree plus weather or then runs extremely rough. Have gone to a mechanic twice each time engine codes had shut off and there was nothing to be done at the moment. Issue still persists, it is still a danger and often it is difficult to have enough momentum to pull over somewhere safe. This issue may also cause further engine problems
I have owned 5 Toyotas and a Lexus SUV and never had so many problems. This is a 2020 Camry Hybrid with only 20492 miles on it. It has had to be jump-started 3-4 times so far, but now it has a new issue: While on a road trip with my wife thru Utah, the car suddenly shuts down, bells ringing and messages appearing. Cruise control, Lane departure, and Headlight System Failure. This happened on a 2-lane highway with very minimal shoulder. I pulled over as far as I could, but still slightly in the lane. Turned off the ignition and after a minute or so, was able to restart the car. Noted that the sign on the road said "Next Services 129 Miles"! This was on July 11, 2022 at about 3 PM. Once car was restarted, we drove to our destination without further issues, however I would not use Cruise control for fear it would happen again. Got back to California the next day and took it to dealer to investigate the cause. Their conclusion: "Extreme heat caused the warning lights to come on, but history code indicates that the issue resolved itself. The vehicle is operating normally at this time but the system will be affected by high temperatures and direct sunlight"!!! The temperature on the road at the time was 95 degrees. Dealer contacted Toyota's technical assistance hot line to document concern Case #221930394. Per the service department, they called the field rep who said if everything was functioning at this time, then there was no action to be taken. First of all, I am 75 years old a
On 6/22/22 around 6:30 pm, the front passenger tire blew out. The tire in question came with the vehicle upon purchasing new on 5/14/20. There is currently about 13,300 miles on the car. Luckily my oldest son was driving and was able to maneuver into a safe place and put on the donut spare. Car had to be driven by son today with donut spare on and will take pictures of subject tires when he gets back home.
Driver seat belts doesn’t buckle properly
It's a dangerous thing. The first time it happened to me was on Jun 15, 2021, only the light came on and when I turned off the car the light went off after a month it came on again and turned off by itself, and now it turned on and it doesn't turn off for nothing. and it only says the PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM & CRUISE CONTROL MALFUNCTION alert. I was doing a little research online and I realized that many people have this problem regardless of the vehicle miles and this is dangerous since this happens on local streets or highways regardless of the speed of the vehicle. please investigate. Thank you.
Smells like engine coolant when exiting vehicle
Dead battery at 21000 miles. Car is less than 2 years old and didn't drive it for 36 hours and the battery completely drained. Even after jump start electronic dash wouldn't function properly.
The component or system that failed and malfunctioned, is the air conditioning drain hose that leaked water into the bottom of the inside of the car, causing extensive damage to the rugs, padding, soundproof insulation, and damage to the metal frame of the bottom of the car. Corrosion of the electrical system. The safety was at risk due to the sickening mildew swampy odor coming from inside the car from an accumulation of stagnant water. It caused me headaches, sinus infections, and aggravated my asthma. Yes, Toyota dealership and SERV PRO and independent lab. Yes, the vehicle component has been inspected by the Insurance company and dealership and SERV PRO, and independent Lab. Yes, there were warnings and symptoms of the problem which appeared less than a year after the new 2020 Toyota camry was bought.
Battery keeps draining with no warning. Has left me stranded multiple times. I have had the battery checked & it is fine. Nothing was left on in the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while her vehicle was parked in her driveway, the rear windshield imploded without incident. The contact called the dealer and was offered no immediate assistance. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. Due to a lack of space at the dealer, the contact had to wait two days before the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact believed that the blind spot sensor and the rear defroster had caused the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was 35,871
The contact owns a 2020 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while pulling out of the driveway, the accelerator pedal was depressed however, the vehicle failed to respond. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated she depressed the accelerator pedal several times until the vehicle responded. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred while she was stopped at a stoplight. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who test drove the vehicle but could not determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 11,000.
While driving vehicle, all of a sudden, the vehicle will slow down, lose power, even while using cruise control set to a specific speed. It will hesitate and driver, will feel car, slow and jolt forward.this occurs all the time while driving, especially if vehicle is warmed up.
When I press the button to start my 2020 Camry it has difficulty starting. It chugs/lags. It also smells of coolant/antifreeze when this happens. It has done this since the day I leased it. I have taken the vehicle back to the dealership 3 times and each time I’m told that they hooked it up to their computer and can’t find anything wrong and they can’t replicate the problem. I have had several witnesses/passengers inside and outside my vehicle who have heard the starting issue and commented on coolant smell. To date, my vehicle only has 7000 miles on it.
I purchased this vehicle on 01/12/2021 from Toyota of Greenville, SC. I was initially told that the vehicle was a Certified Pre-Owned Toyota, which means it went through an intensive reconditioning process and passed all certification requirements. As I was signing the papers to purchase the car, I was told that it could not be sold as a Certified vehicle because it has the open manufacturer recall #20TA02. It has been almost 9 months and I have not received any notice of a pending fix for this potentially deadly recall, summarized below. SUMMARY: The subject vehicles are equipped with a low-pressure fuel pump which may stop operating. If this were to occur, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel, and the engine may run rough. This may result in a vehicle stall, and the vehicle may be unable to be restarted. SAFETY RISK: If a vehicle stall occurs while driving at higher speeds, this could increase the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Any authorized Toyota dealer will replace the low-pressure fuel pump with an improved one FREE OF CHARGE. I am hesitant to take the vehicle on a long trip or take it on the highway. I do not want to be stranded during my trip or die if the fuel pump shuts off at high speed. I have been purchasing Toyota products since 2000. I am feeling very abused and and neglected buy what I thought was a safe and reliable brand. I will be in the market for another vehicle soon. Now, I am not sure Toyota is the only brand to consider. Plea
Wiper speed on high is to slow to see in moderate rain. Zero Visibility, make for a very dangerous situation.
First time went to get in my vehicle and the car would not even open, not even the trunk. Had been parked over night. The car was deader than a door nail. The Toyota dealer had a tow truck dispatched to me with a charge box. The charge box would not even crank the vehicle. Had to use his tow truck to jump the car took to Toyota they said it needed a software update. Did it seemed fine now fast forward several months later now when it cranks doesn’t want to crank, dies then have to try again finally it crank. Took in today at dealer they tested battery said it’s showing 100% testing so not the battery then they say the update didn’t take back months ago so needs to be updated again 🤬. So now I’ve been shuttled home as it will take 2 plus hours. I’ve googled and seen so many complaints that are identical to mine and wondering why my vehicle has no recall when my vehicle has same issues apparently or I’m being lied to by the dealer cause I’ve got a complete lemon. I’ve owned many Toyota’s and never once had issues like this.
Reading these
NHTSA publishes every complaint as the owner wrote it and investigates only a fraction. Spelling, capitalisation and judgement are the filer’s own. What carries weight is repetition: the same component failing the same way across many filings, and whether the manufacturer eventually opened a recall for it.
