NHTSA campaign 99V234000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Blue Bird Body Company: Electrical System › Ignition › Switch

Blue Bird Body Company reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 23, 1999 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 101. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: FRONT ENGINE SCHOOL BUSES EQUIPPED WITH ALLISON WORLD TRANSMISSIONS. THESE BUSES DO NOT FULLY COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 102, "TRANSMISSION, SHIFT LEVER SEQUENCE, STARTER INTERLOCK, AND TRANSMISSION BRAKING EFFECT." THE NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH IS WIRED INCORRECTLY ALLOWING THE STARTER TO ENGAGE WHEN THE IGNITION IS TURNED "ON," FOLLOWED BY THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR BEING PLACED IN FORWARD OR REVERSE POSITIONS, AND THEN THE IGNITION TURNED TO THE "START" POSITION.

The risk

THIS CONDITION WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STAR AND RUN IF THE IGNITION WAS TURNED TO THE "START" POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

The remedy

OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH PARTS AND INSTRUCTIONS NECESSARY TO MODIFY THE ENGINE STARTER/TRANSMISSION SHIFT ELECTRICAL CIRCUITRY. IF AN OWNER SO DESIRES, A DEALER CAN PERFORM THE MODIFICATION FOR THEM.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 99V234000.
