NHTSA campaign 98V013000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Aero Manufacturing, Inc.: Equipment › Recreational Vehicle/Trailer

Aero Manufacturing, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 21, 1998 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 780. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRAVEL TRAILERS. THE SIMULTANEOUS USE OF THE MICROWAVE OVEN AND THE COOKTOP PRODUCES NEGATIVE PRESSURE THAT CAUSES THE FLAMES ON THE COOKTOP TO REVERSE. THIS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE BURNER HEAD, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN EXTINGUISHING THE FLAME. IF THE FLAME IS EXTINGUISHED, LIQUID PROPANE (LP) GAS COULD LEAK INTO THE TRAILER.

The risk

THE PRESENCE OF LP GAS IN THE TRAILER COULD RESULT IN ASPHYXIATION OF PERSONS PRESENT IN THE TRAILER OR POSSIBLY AN EXPLOSION IN THE EVENT THAT THE LP GAS IS IGNITED BY A SPARK.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A DROP-IN BURNER BOX KIT WHICH WILL ELIMINATE THE NEGATIVE PRESSURE WHEN THE MICROWAVE OVEN AND THE COOKTOP ARE USED SIMULTANEOUSLY.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 98V013000.
