NHTSA campaign 97V238004 · Part 573 safety recall report

Strick Corporation: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip

Strick Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on May 27, 1998 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 334. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNITS (ECU) FOR OVER-THE-ROAD TRAILER APPLICATIONS. THE COVER SEAL (O-RING) MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED IN CERTAIN EASY-STOP TRAILER ABS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNITS. AN INCORRECTLY INSTALLED SEAL COULD PERMIT WATER TO ENTER THE ECU CAUSING A FAULT TO DEVELOP. THIS WILL CAUSE THE VEHICLE'S TRAILER ABS WARNING LAMP TO ILLUMINATE IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE WATER CONTACTS THE BOARD, DEACTIVATING ALL OR PART OF THE ABS.

The risk

IF THE WARNING LAMP SIGNAL IS IGNORED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, CORROSION CAN DEVELOP EVENTUALLY LEAKING TO A COMPLETE LOSS OF ECU FUNCTION. THE SERVICE BRAKES WOULD CONTINUE TO BE FULLY FUNCTIONAL.

The remedy

ROCKWELL IS CONDUCTING THE NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY FOR THIS RECALL. DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECU ON THESE TRAILERS.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 97V238004.
