NHTSA campaign 96V055006 · Part 573 safety recall report

Master Vans & Trucks: Seats

Master Vans & Trucks reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 17, 1996 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 509. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY EXTENDED CAB CONVERSION PICKUP TRUCKS BY MASTER VANS. THE SEAT RECLINER TO SEAT FRAME ATTACHING BOLTS ON THESE VEHICLES COULD LOOSEN, FATIGUE, AND FRACTURE, ALLOWING THE SEAT BACK TO SUDDENLY RECLINE.

The risk

IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT, THIS COULD RESULT IN A SUDDEN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

The remedy

VSS IS CONDUCTING THE NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY CAMPAIGN FOR THIS RECALL. DEALERS WILL REMOVE ALL FOAM AND/OR FABRIC SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE RECLINER ASSEMBLY AND THE SEAT FRAME, INSTALL WASHERS BETWEEN THE SEAT RECLINER AND THE SEAT FRAME AT EACH ATTACHMENT POINT, AND INSTALL NEW ATTACHING BOLTS TORQUED TO A HIGHER SPECIFICATION. THESE CORRECTIONS WILL BE MADE TO BOTH THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SEATS.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 96V055006.
