Spartan Motors, Inc.: Engine and Engine Cooling › Cooling System › Fan
Spartan Motors, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 27, 1996 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 52. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
THE FAN CLUTCH FOR THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM FAN WAS COMBINED WITH AN INAPPROPRIATE FAN, WHICH INTERFERES WITH THE DRIVE AND CAN CAUSE THE DRIVE TO SEPARATE.
The risk
IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS WHILE THE ENGINE COVER IS OPEN, A PERSON WORKING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE COULD BE STRUCK BY A PORTION OF THE FAN CLUTCH. IF THE FAN CLUTCH SEPARATES, THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY.
The remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FAN WHICH HAS A CUPPED MOUNTING PLATE WITH A FAN HAVING A STRAIGHT MOUNTING PLATE. THE FAN CLUTCH, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY INTERFERENCE WITH THE FAN, IS BEING REPLACED WITH A NEW DRIVE OF THE SAME MODEL.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 96V052000.
