NHTSA campaign 95V177000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Oshkosh Truck Corporation: Service Brakes, Air › Controls, Pedals and Linkages

Oshkosh Truck Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 20, 1995 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 192. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

A STOP LIGHT SWITCH ON THE BRAKE TREADLE VALVE AND A CRUISE CONTROL DUMP VALVE SWITCH WERE OMITTED DURING ASSEMBLY OR BOTH SWITCHES WERE INSTALLED BUT WERE NOT WIRED CORRECTLY.

The risk

IF A LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE OCCURS IN EITHER FRONT OR REAR BRAKE SYSTEM, THE RESULT OF THESE OMISSIONS IS THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL, IF TURNED ON, WOULD NOT DISENGAGE WHEN THE SERVICE BRAKE WAS APPLIED AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE, INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SECOND STOP LIGHT SWITCH (WIRED IN PARALLEL) AND A SECOND CRUISE CONTROL DUMP VALVE SWITCH (WIRED IN SERIES) INTO THE TREADLE VALVE.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 95V177000.
