NHTSA campaign 94V164000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Am General Corporation: Fuel System, Gasoline › Delivery › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

Am General Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 1, 1994 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 2,300. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH WHICH CONTROLS THE POWER TO THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP CAN FAIL. FAILURE IS DUE TO A MISSING RUBBER SEAL BETWEEN THE SWITCH AND THE WIRING HARNESS. THE MISSING SEAL ALLOWS CONTAMINANTS TO ENTER THE SWITCH CAUSING IT TO FAIL IN THE OPEN OR CLOSED POSITION.

The risk

IF THE SWITCH FAILS IN THE CLOSED POSITION, THE PUMP WILL CONTINUE TO RUN WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF, DRAINING THE BATTERY. IF THE SWITCH FAILS IN THE OPEN POSITION IT WILL CAUSE POOR PERFORMANCE AND POSSIBLY STALLING.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLES FOR THE PRESENCE OF THE SEAL. IF THE SEAL IS MISSING, THE SWITCH WILL BE REPLACED AND A NEW SEAL WILL BE INSTALLED.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 94V164000.
