NHTSA campaign 94V117000 · Part 573 safety recall report

General Motors Corp.: Equipment › Other › Owners/Service/Other Manual

General Motors Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 24, 1994 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 6,315. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

THESE VEHICLES WERE SHIPPED WITH THE WRONG OWNER'S MANUAL, AND, THEREFORE, THE CORRECT INFORMATION REGARDING SAFETY BELT USAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE OWNER. THIS DOES NOT CONFORM WITH FMVSS NO. 209, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES."

The risk

UNBELTED OCCUPANTS OR OCCUPANTS USING SAFETY BELTS INCORRECTLY ARE MORE AT RISK OF INJURY THAN THOSE USING THE SAFETY BELT IN THE CORRECT MANNER IN THE EVENT OF A SUDDEN STOP OR ACCIDENT.

The remedy

OWNERS AND OLDSMOBILE DEALERS ARE BEING MAILED THE CORRECT 1994 OLDSMOBILE BRAVURA OWNER'S MANUAL AND WILL BE ASKED TO INSTALL IT IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPARTMENT AND REMOVE AND DISCARD THE INCORRECT OWNER'S MANUAL.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 94V117000.
