Daimler Trucks North America, LLC: Structure › Emergency › Escape/Egress/Exit

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 26, 2024 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 162. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 and 2024-2025 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley school buses. The audible emergency warning alarm sounds may not activate when the emergency hatch or window is open. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 217, "Bus Emergency Exits and Window Retention and Release."

The risk

An inaudible alarm that fails to warn the driver of an open emergency exit can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

The remedy

Dealers will update the emergency sound software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 22, 2024. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is F1004.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 24V478000.
