NHTSA campaign 24V375000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Navistar, Inc.: Exterior Lighting › Brake Lights

Navistar, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on May 29, 2024 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 319. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2024-2025 IC Bus CE school buses. The brake lights, in certain conditions, may not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed, due to a software error. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

The risk

Brake lights that fail to illuminate can reduce the visibility of the bus or fail to indicate to other drivers that the bus is slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 24, 2024. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 24508.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 24V375000.
