NHTSA campaign 22V498000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Big Tex Trailer Manufacturing, Inc.: Tires › Temporary/Emergency Spare Tire

Big Tex Trailer Manufacturing, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 11, 2022 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,724. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Big Tex Trailer Manufacturing, Inc. (Big Tex Trailer) is recalling certain 2003-2022 16GN trailers. The spare tire mount allows the spare tire to vibrate, which can cause the joint between the spare tire mount and the trailer to fatigue and eventually fail.

The risk

Spare tire mount failure can allow the spare tire to detach from the trailer and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Dealers will relocate and reinforce the spare tire mount, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 9, 2022. Owners may contact Big Tex Trailer's customer service at 1-800-594-5637.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 22V498000.
