NHTSA campaign 20V485000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America LLC: Electrical System › Instrument Cluster/Panel

Daimler Trucks North America LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 14, 2020 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,715. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCL, XCP, XCR and XCS and 2015-2019 Custom Chassis XCM vehicles. The instrument panel brightness cannot be adjusted, possibly causing glare when driving at night. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays."

The risk

Glare can reduce the driver's visibility of the road, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owner, and dealers will update the software and processor, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 1, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-859.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 20V485000.
