NHTSA campaign 20V120000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Pierce Manufacturing: Equipment

Pierce Manufacturing reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 28, 2020 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 63. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Pierce Manufacturing (Pierce) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Arrow XT, Enforcer, Impel, and Velocity Emergency fire emergency vehicles built with a 107 foot or 110 foot aerial device. A rectangular tube in the upper mid-section of the aerial device may develop cracks and corrosion, possibly causing one of the tube walls to fail and the aerial device to become unsteady.

The risk

The failed tube may cause the aerial device to fall, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy

Pierce will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the presence of cracks and/or evidence of corrosion. If no cracks or corrosion is found, the tube will receive a treatment to prevent rust corrosion. If cracks or corrosion is present, the upper mid section of the device will be replaced. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 25, 2020. Owners may contact Pierce customer service at 1-888-974-3723.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 20V120000.
