NHTSA campaign 20V086000 · Part 573 safety recall report

PACCAR Incorporated: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Differential Proportional Valve

PACCAR Incorporated reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 14, 2020 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2020 Kenworth T370 long wheelbase vehicles with larger rear axle spacing. The vehicles may be missing a second R12 relay valve, causing increased brake activation timing. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

The risk

Increased brake activation timing may lengthen vehicle stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

PACCAR will notify owners, and Kenworth dealers will install a second R12 relay valve, free of charge. PACCAR issued owners an interim notification on April 14, 2020. The recall began May 6, 2020. Owners may contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888. PACCAR's number for this recall is 20KWA.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 20V086000.
