NHTSA campaign 19V924000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Motor Coach Industries: Suspension › Rear › Axle › Non-powered Axle Assembly

Motor Coach Industries reported this defect to federal regulators on Dec 27, 2019 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 276. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2018-2020 D4505 and D4500 coaches equipped with an optional steerable tag axle. The tag axle mounting block clamps that retain the tie rod to obtain the forward steer orientation may slip, resulting in the tag axle being out of alignment.

The risk

If the tag axle becomes misaligned with the front of the vehicle, the rear of the vehicle may strike other vehicles or pedestrians, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

The remedy

MCI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the block clamps and retorque the fasteners, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2020. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 19V924000.
