Navistar, Inc.: Engine

Navistar, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 21, 2019 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 12,539. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2019-2020 International MV and HV, 2018-2020 Workstar, and 2018-2019 Durastar vehicles equipped with feature codes 12VXT and 12VXU. With the parking brake applied and the automatic transmission in the 'Drive' or 'Reverse' position, when the stationary PTO switch is engaged by the operator, the engine RPM will ramp up and may overcome the parking brake's ability to hold the vehicle.

The risk

Unintended vehicle movement increases the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will update the Engine Control Module to enable the PTO neutral interlock, free of charge. The recall began January 16, 2020. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 19518.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 19V841000.
