Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp.: Back Over Prevention › Sensing System › Camera

Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 25, 2019 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 4. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. (KME) is recalling certain 2017 KME commercial rescue and 2019 KME commercial tanker vehicles equipped with an ASA Electronics backup camera display. The display may revert back to the factory default settings, which may cause the camera image to be reversed.

The risk

The driver may inadvertently turn the wrong direction to avoid an object behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

KME will notify owners, and dealers will install a harness/relay/capacitor module to prevent the image from reversing. The recall began May 17, 2019. Owners may contact KME customer service at 1-800-235-3928.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 19V230000.
