NHTSA campaign 19V171000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America LLC: Electrical System › Instrument Cluster/Panel

Daimler Trucks North America LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 5, 2019 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 361. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2019 Western Star 4700 and 4900 trucks. The vehicles are accumulating distance in kilometers, but the odometer display is labeled as being miles. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Control and Displays."

The risk

The odometer failing to register the correct distance travelled could cause driver confusion, as well as possible incorrect assumptions about driver speed. An incorrect speed assumption may increase the risk of crash.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the speedometer, free of charge. The recall began April 29, 2019. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-812.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 19V171000.
