W. S. Darley & Co.: Exterior Lighting › Brake Lights
W. S. Darley & Co. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 4, 2019 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 5. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.
The defect
W.S. Darley & Co. (Darley) is recalling certain 2017-2019 WASP fire trucks built on a Ford F-550 or Spartan Metro Star chassis equipped with Whelen brake lights. Depending on the specific wiring of the vehicle, these brake lights may illuminate when the brake pedal is not being pressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective devices, and Assoc. Equipment."
The risk
If the brake lights incorrectly illuminate, it may confuse other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Darley has notified owners and will provide replacement brake lights, free of charge. The recall began March 18, 2019. Owners may contact Darley customer service at 1-800-634-7812.

What this page is, and what to do next
A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.
This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 19V162000.
