NHTSA campaign 19V134000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing: Tires › Sidewall

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing reported this defect to federal regulators on Feb 27, 2019 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 6,296. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2018 Lexus LS vehicles equipped with run-flat tires with a sidewall reinforcement layer inside the tire. The tire-on-wheel assembly process may have caused the reinforcement layer to crack, possibly resulting in the tire tread layer separating from the tire.

The risk

If the tire tread layer separates from the vehicle, vehicle handling and stability may be affected, increasing the risk of crash.

The remedy

Toyota will notify owners, and Lexus dealers will replace the affected tires, free of charge. The recall began April 26, 2019. Owners may contact Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. The Toyota number for this recall is KLC.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 19V134000.
