NHTSA campaign 18V799000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Forest River, Inc.: Seats

Forest River, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 12, 2018 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 38. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2017 Starcraft Senator II, 2016-2018 Starcraft Allstar, 2017-2018 Starcraft Starlite, and 2019 Starcraft Starquest transit buses, equipped with Freedman GO-ES Foldaway Seats, part numbers 43705, 45467, 48923, and 75719. When the back seat cushion is rotated from the stowed position to the upright position, the seat cushion may not remain locked into place when under load, such as in a crash or a sudden stop. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems," and 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

The risk

In the event of a crash, if the seat back moves, the seat occupant has an increased risk of injury.

The remedy

Forest River will notify owners, and Freedman Seating will repair the foldaway seat, free of charge. The recall began December 4, 2018. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-642-3112 or Freedman customer service at 1-800-443-4540. Forest River's number for this recall is 05-0903.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 18V799000.
