NHTSA campaign 18V309000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Motor Coach Industries: Engine and Engine Cooling › Exhaust System › Manifold/Header/Muffler/Tail Pipe

Motor Coach Industries reported this defect to federal regulators on May 13, 2018 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,123. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2011-2016 D4500, D4505, D4000, D4005, and D4000 ISTV motor coaches equipped with ISX engines. Due to vibrations, the exhaust bellow pipes develop a hole.

The risk

If the pipe develops a hole, during a regeneration cycle, hot exhaust gases may leak out, increasing the risk of a fire.

The remedy

MCI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the bellows pipe assembly with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began July 10, 2018. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 18V309000.
