NHTSA campaign 18V188000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ferrari North America, Inc.: Air Bags › Frontal › Passenger Side › Inflator Module

Ferrari North America, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 23, 2018 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,870. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Ferrari North America, Inc. (Ferrari) is recalling certain 2009-2011 Ferrari California, and 2010-2011 Ferrari 458 Italia vehicles that have not had their passenger frontal air bag replaced. These passenger frontal air bag modules have air bag inflators that may explode in the event of a crash due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

The risk

An inflator explosion may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

The remedy

Ferrari will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag assembly with one that uses an alternate inflator, free of charge. Owners may contact Ferrari customer service at 1-201-816-2668. Ferrari's number for this recall is 60A. Note: This recall supersedes recall 16V-341.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 18V188000.
