NHTSA campaign 18V163000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America LLC: Steering › Hydraulic Power Assist › Hose, Piping, and Connections

Daimler Trucks North America LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on Mar 12, 2018 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 9,480. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2011-2017 Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) XBR, XCL, XCM, and XCR recreational vehicle chassis, equipped with Cummins ISL engines. The power steering hose on the affected vehicles may be routed incorrectly, and, as a result, the hose may rub against the power stud on the starter motor, possibly causing electrical arcing and a power steering fluid leak.

The risk

Electrical arcing in the presence of leaking power steering fluid can increase the risk of a fire.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will reroute the power steering hose to provide proper clearance, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on May 2018. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 . DTNA's number for this recall is FL-762. Note: This recall is an expansion of 16V-809.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 18V163000.
