NHTSA campaign 18V064000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc.: Engine and Engine Cooling › Engine

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jan 22, 2018 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 3,097. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2017-2018 GSX-R1000, GSX-R1000A, GSX-R1000RA, and GSX-R1000RZA motorcycles. When upshifting between first and second gear, if the rider fails to engage second gear, a neutral condition will exist and may cause very high engine RPM. If the rider then shifts into second gear without disengaging the clutch, the motorcycle’s chain may stretch or break.

The risk

If the drive chain breaks, the motorcycle will lose power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the Engine Control Module (ECM), and inspect and replace the drive chain and sprockets, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 25, 2018. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-714-572-1490. Suzuki's numbers for this recall are 2A76 to 2A81.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 18V064000.
