NHTSA campaign 17V694000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Van-Con, Inc.: Seats › Barriers

Van-Con, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 2, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 320. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Van-Con, Inc. (Van-Con) is recalling certain 2007-2017 Dual Rear Wheel school buses built on Chevrolet 3500 Express chassis. The seat barrier behind the driver seat may be pinned to the bulkhead preventing it from deforming in the event of an impact. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 222, "School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection."

The risk

If the barrier is too rigid to absorb an impact, the occupants will have an increased risk of injury.

The remedy

Van-Con will notify owners and will reposition the barrier as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 19, 2017. Owners may contact Van-Con customer service at 1-732-356-8484.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V694000.
