Motor Coach Industries: Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Hoses, Lines/Piping, and Fittings

Motor Coach Industries reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 30, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 35. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2018 MCI J4500 buses. The primary air line was incorrectly hooked to the secondary air pressure gauge and the secondary air line was hooked to the primary air pressure gauge. As such, these buses fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems."

The risk

The incorrect air pressure readings may increase the risk of a crash by delaying the driver's reaction to addressing the low air condition.

The remedy

MCI will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air lines for proper connection, repairing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 12, 2017. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-29471. MCI's number for this recall is SB 455.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V687000.
