NHTSA campaign 17V680000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Tremcar: Structure

Tremcar reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 26, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 223. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Tremcar is recalling certain 2008-2017 Hutchinson and Tremcar 406 B-train Pups, 2012-2017 Hutchinson and Tremcar 406 2 Axle Semi-Trailers, 2015-2017 Tremcar 406 3 Axle Semi-Trailers, and 2013 Tremcar 406 Quad Wagon vehicles. The rear impact guards on these vehicles were manufactured with aluminum alloy of insufficient strength. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 223, "Rear Impact Guards."

The risk

These rear impact guards may not adequately reduce the possibility of a car traveling under the trailer in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the car driver.

The remedy

Tremcar has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear impact guards, free of charge. The recall began on October 31, 2017. Owners may contact Tremcar customer service at 1-800-363-2158.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V680000.
