NHTSA campaign 17V337000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Motor Coach Industries: Engine and Engine Cooling › Exhaust System

Motor Coach Industries reported this defect to federal regulators on May 24, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 143. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2011-2012 MCI D4000, D4005, D4500 and D4505 coaches equipped with Cummins ISX 12 liter engines. The vehicles may have an incorrectly installed exhaust bellow pipe, resulting in a bend in the pipe which can cause its premature failure.

The risk

If the pipe fails and a diesel regeneration cycle occurs, the hot exhaust gases will increase the risk of a fire.

The remedy

MCI will notify owners and dealers will inspect and replace any deformed or failed bellow pipes if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Motor Industries at 1-800-241-2947. MCI's number for this recall is SB 397B.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V337000.
