NHTSA campaign 17V322000 · Part 573 safety recall report

PACCAR Incorporated: Service Brakes, Air

PACCAR Incorporated reported this defect to federal regulators on May 16, 2017 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 23. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Kenworth T800 and T880 vehicles equipped with Neway ADZ tridem rear suspensions. The brake control airline may be the incorrect size, resulting in an imbalance in the service brake application timing. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air brake systems."

The risk

An incorrectly sized airline may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Kenworth will notify owners, and dealers will modify the air brake system with updated brake piping, free of charge. The recall began on June 21, 2017. Owners may contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5000. PACCAR's number for this recall is 17KWB.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 17V322000.
