NHTSA campaign 16V836000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Volvo Bus Corporation: Electrical System › Wiring › Fuses and Circuit Breakers

Volvo Bus Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Nov 18, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 583. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Volvo Bus Corporation (Volvo Bus) is recalling certain model year 2008-2017 9700 buses manufactured January 7, 2008, to August 25, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with a power feed relay for the engine and transmission which may be undersized for the application, causing the relay to fail and the engine to stall.

The risk

An unexpected engine shutdown increases the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Volvo Bus will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing relay with a larger, more robust, relay, free of charge. The recall began on December 20, 2016. Owners may contact Volvo Bus customer service at 1-877-773-8678. Volvo Bus' number for this recall is SR16-86.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V836000.
