NHTSA campaign 16V771000 · Part 573 safety recall report

East Manufacturing Corp.: Equipment

East Manufacturing Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 24, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 20. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

East Manufacturing Corp. (East) is recalling certain model year 2016 Beast II flatbed trailers manufactured May 22, 2015, to June 19, 2015, equipped with certain Conestoga XP sliding trailer tarping systems with RAD-style rear closures. In the affected trailers, the rear aerodynamic device (RAD) may separate from the rear of the tarping system, due to rivet failure.

The risk

If the RAD detaches from the trailer it may be a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

East will notify owners, and dealers will replace the mounting rivets with a bolted connection, free of charge. The recall began on September 6, 2016. Owners may contact East customer service at 1-330-325-9921. East's number for this recall is 16E-066.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V771000.
