NHTSA campaign 16V744000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Newmar Corporation: Equipment Adaptive/Mobility

Newmar Corporation reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 17, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 114. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain model year 2012-2017 Canyon Star motor homes manufactured September 7, 2011, to September 6, 2016 and equipped with wheelchair lifts. Incorrect bolts may have been used to install the wheelchair lift base. These bolts may unexpectedly break allowing the lift to move. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 404, "Platform Lift Installations."

The risk

Unintentional movement of the wheelchair lift can cause injury to the lift occupant and/or the lift operator.

The remedy

Newmar will notify owners, and Newmar service facilities will replace the wheelchair lift base mounting bolts, free of charge. The recall began on October 28, 2016. Owners may contact Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V744000.
