NHTSA campaign 16V710000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Altec Industries Inc.: Equipment

Altec Industries Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Oct 5, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 219. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Altec Industries Inc (Altec) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 A65, A70, A75, A72-T, A77-T, and A82-T aerial devices manufactured April 15, 2014, to October 15, 2015. The affected aerial devices have a fiberglass cover over the boom tip that may have an improperly sized opening.

The risk

The improperly sized opening may allow the exposed metal tip of the boom to contact an electrically energized conductor, such as an overhead wire, increasing the risk of a injury to the boom operator.

The remedy

Altec will notify owners, and dealers will replace any boom tip cover that has an improperly sized opening, free of charge. The recall began on December 1, 2016. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-205-991-7733.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V710000.
