Piaggio Group Americas. Inc.: Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Foundation Components › Master Cylinder

Piaggio Group Americas. Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Sep 26, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 1,628. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Piaggio Group Americas, Inc. (Piaggio) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Aprilia Tuono V4 1000, 2016 Tuono V4 1100, 2015 Caponord 1200 ABS/ADD, and 2016 Caponord Rally motorcycles manufactured June 18, 2013, to June 13, 2016. The affected motorcycles have a front brake master cylinder that may allow air into the hydraulic circuit, causing a longer than expected braking distance.

The risk

If an abnormal distance is required to stop the motorcycle, there is an increased risk of a crash.

The remedy

Aprilia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake master cylinder pushrod and boot assembly, free of charge. The recall began October 04, 2016. Owners may contact Aprilia customer service at 1-866-705-1727.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V691000.
