Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp.: Power Train › Driveline › Driveshaft

Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 29, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 56. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. (KME) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Predator SS Pumper vehicles manufactured January 17, 2015, to July 21, 2015, and 2014-2016 FDNY Pumper vehicles manufactured May 21, 2014, to July 27, 2015. The affected vehicles may have replacement drive shafts that may twist and fail during use.

The risk

Failure of the driveshaft may leave the fire truck immobilized in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the truck may not be able to respond to an emergency, increasing the chances of injury for those at risk.

The remedy

KME has notified owners, and dealers replaced the drive shafts, free of charge. All affected vehicles have been remedied, free of charge. Owners may contact KME customer service at 1-800-235-3926.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V626000.
