NHTSA campaign 16V572000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Aluma/Klm: Trailer Hitches

Aluma/Klm reported this defect to federal regulators on Aug 2, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 529. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Aluma/KLM is recalling certain model year 2011-2015 5410T and 5410WD trailers manufactured January 1, 2011, to June 1, 2015. Due to missing welds, the trailer tongues may separate from the body of the trailer.

The risk

If the trailer tongue separates, the rear of the tongue retainer and tongue tube will drag on pavement and the trailer will not be properly secured to the tow vehicle, resulting in a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Aluma/KLM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the trailers for missing welds, adding any missing welds and retrofitting two additional gussets, free of charge. The recall began on September 30, 2016. Owners may contact Aluma/KLM customer service at 1-866-415-3285.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V572000.
