Ameritrans Bus, Inc.: Equipment › Other › Labels

Ameritrans Bus, Inc. reported this defect to federal regulators on Jul 1, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 803. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Ameritrans Bus, Inc. (Ameritrans) is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 shuttle buses manufactured August 1, 2012, to June 24, 2016, built on Ford E-350, E-450, and F-550 chassis, Dodge 5500 chassis, and Freightliner M2 chassis. These vehicles may be equipped with Tire and Loading Placards that are not applicable to vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

The risk

Use of the label on these vehicles may confuse the operator and may result in overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Ameritrans will notify owners, and dealers will remove the Tire and Loading Placards, free of charge. The recall began on September 2, 2016. Owners may contact Ameritrans Customer Service Department at 1-574-218-4786.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V497000.
