NHTSA campaign 16V459000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA: Engine and Engine Cooling

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 23, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 11,280. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Yamaha YZF-R3 F/G motorcycles manufactured January 1, 2015, to April 15, 2016. Due to an oil pump problem, the oil pressure in these motorcycles may not be properly regulated. As a result, the oil pump drive gear may fail and cause the engine to seize from lack of oil supply.

The risk

If the engine seizes from a lack of oil supply, the rear wheel may lock up suddenly, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Yamaha has notified owners, and dealers will replace the oil pump, free of charge. The recall began July 5, 2016. Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926. Yamaha's number for this recall is 990105.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V459000.
