NHTSA campaign 16V423000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Heartland Trailer Mfg: Exterior Lighting

Heartland Trailer Mfg reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 10, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 70. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Heartland Trailer Mfg. (Heartland) is recalling certain model year 2016 18' Carhauler dovetail trailers manufactured December 1, 2015, to April 30, 2016. The affected trailers have clearance lights that are not visible from the rear of the trailer. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Assoc. Equipment."

The risk

Without visible clearance lights, the trailer is at an increased risk of a crash.

The remedy

Heartland will notify owners, and dealers will install P2-rated beehive-style clearance lamps on the front and rear sides of the trailer, free of charge. The recall began on July 22, 2016. Owners may contact Heartland customer service at 1-573-471-6826.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V423000.
