NHTSA campaign 16V392000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Kymco USA: Power Train › Manual Transmission

Kymco USA reported this defect to federal regulators on Jun 1, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 340. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

KYMCO (KYMCO USA) is recalling certain model year 2016 K-Pipe motorcycles manufactured March 1, 2016, to May 25, 2016. In the affected models, the gear shift pattern was assembled in a reverse sequence when compared to the standard setup. As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 123, "Motorcycle Controls and Displays."

The risk

If the motorcycle shifts opposite of other motorcycles, a rider may be confused and may select the wrong gear, adversely affecting control of the motorcycle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy

KYMCO will notify owners, and dealers will repair the motorcycles, free of charge. The recall began on July 13, 2016. Owners may contact KYMCO customer service at 1-888-235-3417.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V392000.
