NHTSA campaign 16V339000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Ducati North America: Power Train › Clutch Assembly

Ducati North America reported this defect to federal regulators on May 23, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 168. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Ducati North America (Ducati) is recalling certain model year 2014 1199 Superleggera motorcycles manufactured April 8, 2014, through November 13, 2014. On the affected motorcycles, the damper plate assembled between the primary driven gear and the clutch basket assembly could break due to fatigue, and result in the engine seizing, and therefore, the rear wheel locking up.

The risk

A rear wheel lock up may cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Ducati will notify owners, and dealers will install a new clutch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on July 11, 2016. Owners may contact Ducati customer service at 1-800-231-6696. Ducati's number for this recall is SRV-RCL-16-002.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V339000.
