NHTSA campaign 16V324000 · Part 573 safety recall report

Daimler Trucks North America LLC: Engine and Engine Cooling › Engine › Diesel

Daimler Trucks North America LLC reported this defect to federal regulators on May 19, 2016 and put the number of vehicles at risk at 131. The repair is free for as long as the recall stands.

The defect

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2017 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner HDX buses manufactured November 29, 2012, to February 4, 2016. These vehicles use a rubber elbow to connect a coolant line to a heater inside the bus. This elbow may restrict coolant flow and possibly fail as a result of the increased stress on the elbow.

The risk

If the rubber elbow fails, hot coolant may leak inside the bus body increasing risk of injury to the passengers.

The remedy

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rubber elbow with a nylon fitting, free of charge. An interim notice was mailed on July 6, 2016. The recall began on September 20, 2016. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-708.

What this page is, and what to do next

A recall is not an opinion. It is a Part 573 report a manufacturer is required by federal law to file once it decides a defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, and it commits them to repairing the vehicle at no cost to the owner. The three passages above are the manufacturer’s own wording as published by NHTSA.

This page describes the campaign. It cannot tell you whether one particular car has already been through the shop — that is tracked by VIN, and only the manufacturer knows it. Check yours at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer, quoting campaign number 16V324000.
